 자신을 과소 평가하는 것

♡ 사무엘상 15:10 - 15:18 

“ 사무엘이 이르되 왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그 때에 이스라엘 지파의 머리가 되지 아니하셨나이까 여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으시고 “(사무엘상 15:17)

나이 어린 젊은이가  팀의 주장이 되었습니다. 

수염도 거의 나지 않은 순한 어린 친구가 이제 프로 스포츠팀을 이끌게 된 것입니다. 

그의 첫 번째 기자회견은 실망스러웠습니다.   그는 코치와 팀 동료들에게 계속 미루면서 그저 자신의 책임을 다 하겠다는 상투적인 말로만 얼버무렸습니다. 그 시즌 동안 팀의 성적은 부진했고, 결국 시즌 끝에 그 어린 주장은 다른 팀으로 이적되었습니다. 

그는 자신에게 리더의 지위가 맡겨졌다는 사실을 진지하게 받아들이지 않았거나, 아니면 그 일을 맡을 자신이 아예 없었던 것 같았습니다. 

사울도 실패를 하고 나서 “스스로 작게 여겼습니다”(사무엘상 15:17).   키가 크다고 기록된 그에게는 어울리지 않는 말입니다.   그는 정말 다른 사람들보다 키가 어깨 위만큼 더 컸지만(9:2), 자신을 그렇게 보지 않았습니다. 

사실 오늘 본문은 그가 사람들의 인정을 받으려고 애쓰는 모습을 보여줍니다. 

그는 사람들이 아니라 하나님께서 그를 선택하고 임무를 부여하셨다는 사실을 정말로 심각하게 받아들이지 않았던 것입니다.

그런데 사울의 실수는 사람이라면 누구나 할 수 있는 실수의 표본입니다. 

우리는 하나님의 통치하심이 나타나도록 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받았음을 잊어버리고, 우리의 권위를 잘못 사용해 그 결과 사방이 파멸에 처하게 됩니다.

이를 되돌리려면 우리가 하나님께로 돌아가야 합니다. 

그래서 하나님이 그분의 사랑으로 우리가 누구인지 뚜렷이 밝히시고, 성령으로 우리를 충만케 하시고, 예수님이 우리를 세상으로 보내시도록 말입니다.

나는 할 능력이 없다고 생각하는데 그럼에도 하나님께서 맡기신 일이 있습니까? 

왜 우리는 하나님이 맞다고 인정하시는 것에 근거해 우리의 정체성을 지녀야 하는 걸까요?

< 사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 하나님이 나를 보시는 것처럼 나를 보게 하시고, 맡겨 주신 일을 충성스럽게 행할 수 있는 은혜를 주소서. >

10. 여호와의 말씀이 사무엘에게 임하니라 이르시되

11. 내가 사울을 왕으로 세운 것을 후회하노니 그가 돌이켜서 나를 따르지 아니하며 내 명령을 행하지 아니하였음이니라 하신지라 사무엘이 근심하여 온 밤을 여호와께 부르짖으니라

12. 사무엘이 사울을 만나려고 아침에 일찍이 일어났더니 어떤 사람이 사무엘에게 말하여 이르되 사울이 갈멜에 이르러 자기를 위하여 기념비를 세우고 발길을 돌려 길갈로 내려갔다 하는지라

13. 사무엘이 사울에게 이른즉 사울이 그에게 이르되 원하건대 당신은 여호와께 복을 받으소서 내가 여호와의 명령을 행하였나이다 하니

14. 사무엘이 이르되 그러면 내 귀에 들려오는 이 양의 소리와 내게 들리는 소의 소리는 어찌 됨이니이까 하니라

15. 사울이 이르되 그것은 무리가 아말렉 사람에게서 끌어 온 것인데 백성이 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려 하여 양들과 소들 중에서 가장 좋은 것을 남김이요 그 외의 것은 우리가 진멸하였나이다 하는지라

16. 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 가만히 계시옵소서 간 밤에 여호와께서 내게 이르신 것을 왕에게 말하리이다 하니 그가 이르되 말씀하소서

17. 사무엘이 이르되 왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그 때에 이스라엘 지파의 머리가 되지 아니하셨나이까 여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으시고

18. 또 여호와께서 왕을 길로 보내시며 이르시기를 가서 죄인 아말렉 사람을 진멸하되 다 없어지기까지 치라 하셨거늘

 UNDERESTIMATING OURSELVES

♡ 1 Samuel 15:10 - 15:18

Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel.” ( 1 SAMUEL 15:17 )

The young man became his team’s captain. 

The professional sports squad was now led by a mild-mannered kid who barely needed to shave. 

His first press conference was underwhelming. 

He kept deferring to the coach and to his teammates, and mumbled clichés about just trying to do his job. 

The team performed poorly that season, and by the end of it the young captain had been traded. 

He didn’t grasp that he’d been entrusted with the authority to lead, or maybe he never believed he could.

Due to his failures, Saul was “small in [his] own eyes” (1 SAMUEL 15:17)— which is a funny thing to say about a guy who’s described as being tall. 

He was literally head and shoulders above the rest (9:2).  And yet that wasn’t how he saw himself. 

In fact, his actions in the chapter show him trying to win the approval of the people. 

He hadn’t fully grasped that God—not people—had chosen him and given him a mission.

But Saul’s mistake is a picture of every human being’s failure: we can miss that we were made in God’s image to reflect His rule, and end up misusing our authority—spreading destruction in the world. 

To undo this, we need to return to God: to let the Father define us by His love, to let Him fill us with the Spirit, and to let Jesus send us out into the world

What assignment has God given you that you don’t think you have the power to do? 

Why is it vital to have your identity based in what God says is true?

< Dear Father, give me eyes to see myself as You see me, and grant me the grace to faithfully carry out the calling You’ve entrusted to me.>

10. Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel:

11. "I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions." Samuel was troubled, and he cried out to the LORD all that night.

12. Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, "Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal."

13. When Samuel reached him, Saul said, "The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD's instructions."

14. But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?"

15. Saul answered, "The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but we totally destroyed the rest."

16. "Stop!" Samuel said to Saul. "Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night." "Tell me," Saul replied.

17. Samuel said, "Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel.

18. And he sent you on a mission, saying, `Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.'
