 Dangerous Shortcuts

[Jesus said,] “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
( Matthew 4:4 )

During recent elections in my country, one struggling mom I know exchanged her vote for a bag of diapers. We had discussed the benefits of each candidate, so her choice disappointed me.
“But what about your convictions?”I asked.
She remained silent. Six months after her candidate won, taxes went even higher. Everything is now more expensive than before ... even diapers!

In countries around the world, political corruption is not new. Spiritual corruption is not new either. Satan tried to lure Jesus into “selling”His convictions (Matt. 4:1-10).
The tempter came to Him when He was tired and hungry.
He offered Him immediate satisfaction, fresh bread in seconds, a miraculous delivery, the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

But Jesus knew better. He knew that shortcuts were dangerous enemies. They may offer a road free from suffering, but in the end the pain they carry is much worse than anything we can imagine.
“It is written,”Jesus said three times during His temptation (vv.4,7,10). He held firm to what He knew was true from God and His Word.

When we are tempted, God can help us too. We can depend on Him and the truth of His Word to help us avoid dangerous shortcuts.

Help me not to take shortcuts to satisfaction, Lord.
Help me to run to You and Your Word
for the strength to fight the enemy.

Matthew 4:1-10

[1] Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
[2] And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
[3] Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
[4] But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
[5] Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
[6] and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
[7] Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"
[8] Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
[9] And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."
[10] Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"

위험한 지름길

말씀 읽기:

" [예수께서 대답하여 이르시되] 기록되었으되 사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니요 하나님의 입으로부터 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이라 하였느니라 "
( 마태복음 4:4 )

최근 내 나라에서 치렀던 선거에서 내가 아는 한 가난한 아기엄마는 기저귀 한 묶음을 주었던 후보에게 투표하였다.
우리가 이미 각 후보자들의 장단점을 논의했었기에 나는 그녀의 선택에 실망했다. 내가 “어떤 확신이 있어서 그러셨어요?”라고 물어보자 그녀는 아무 말도 하지 못했다.
그녀가 뽑은 후보가 당선되고 반년이 지난 뒤 세금은 전보다 많아졌고 모든 물가가, 심지어 기저귀 가격조차 많이 올랐다.

세계 여러 나라에서 정치적인 부패는 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 영적인 부패 또한 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 사탄은 예수님을 유혹하며 주님이 확신하고 있는 것을 “팔아버리라”고 했습니다(마 4:1-10). 유혹은 예수님이 지치고 배고팠을 때 다가왔습니다. 사탄은 예수님에게 즉시 편하게 해주고, 신선한 음식을 바로 가져다주며, 기적적으로 구출해주고, 세상의 왕국과 영화를 주겠다고 제안하였습니다.

그러나 예수님은 더 좋은 것을 알고 계셨고, 지름길이 위험한 적이라는 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 그 지름길들이 고생을 겪지않는 손쉬운 길을 권할지는 몰라도 결국 그 길들이 가져다주는 고통은 생각할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 심각합니다.
예수님은 유혹 당하시는 동안 세 번이나 “기록되었으되”라고 말씀하셨습니다(4, 7, 10절). 예수님은 진리임을 알고 있는 하나님과 하나님의 말씀을 견고히 붙드셨습니다.

우리가 유혹 받을 때 하나님은 우리도 도와주실 수 있습니다. 우리는 주님과 진리이신 주님의 말씀에 의지함으로 위험한 지름길을 피하는 데 도움을 받게 됩니다.


만족을 얻기 위해
내가 쉽게 유혹받는 어떤 지름길들이 있는가?
나 자신을 준비시키기 위해
나는 무엇을 할 수 있는가?

마태복음 4:1-10

[1] 그 때에 예수께서 성령에게 이끌리어 마귀에게 시험을 받으러 광야로 가사
[2] 사십 일을 밤낮으로 금식하신 후에 주리신지라
[3] 시험하는 자가 예수께 나아와서 이르되 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 명하여 이 돌들로 떡덩이가 되게 하라

[5] 이에 마귀가 예수를 거룩한 성으로 데려다가 성전 꼭대기에 세우고
[6] 이르되 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 뛰어내리라 기록되었으되 그가 너를 위하여 그의 사자들을 명하시리니 그들이 손으로 너를 받들어 발이 돌에 부딪치지 않게 하리로다 하였느니라
[7] 예수께서 이르시되 또 기록되었으되 주 너의 하나님을 시험하지 말라 하였느니라 하시니
[8] 마귀가 또 그를 데리고 지극히 높은 산으로 가서 천하 만국과 그 영광을 보여
[9] 이르되 만일 내게 엎드려 경배하면 이 모든 것을 네게 주리라
[10] 이에 예수께서 말씀하시되 사탄아 물러가라 기록되었으되 주 너의 하나님께 경배하고 다만 그를 섬기라 하였느니라
