"너희 모든 일을 사랑으로 행하라" [고린도전서 16:14]

네 명의 그 군목은 “영웅”으로 알려진 사람들이 아니었습니다. 그러나 2차 세계대전 중인 1943년 2월의 어느 추운 밤, 그들의 수송선 ‘SS 도체스터호’가 그린랜드 해안에서 어뢰 공격을 받았을 때, 그 네 명은 공황 상태에 빠진 수백 명의 병사들을 진정시키기 위해 전력을 다했습니다. 배가 가라앉으면서 부상당한 사람들이 초만원인 구명정으로 뛰어내리는 가운데, 그 네 군목은 “용기에 대해 설교”하면서 그 혼란을 진정시켰다고 한 생존자는 말했습니다.

구명조끼가 동이 났을 때, 그 군목들은 각각 자기 것을 벗어서 겁에 질린 청년에게 주었습니다. 그들은 다른 사람들을 살리기 위해 자신이 배와 함께 가라앉기로 결심했습니다. 한 생존자는 “그것은 이 땅의 천국에서 내가 보았던, 혹은 보고 싶은 가장 아름다운 모습이었습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

배가 가라앉기 시작했을 때, 군목들은 서로 팔짱을 낀 채 큰 소리로 기도하며 함께 죽어가는 군인들을 격려했습니다.

용기는 영웅담의 특징입니다. 하지만 네 군목이 베푼 것은 사랑입니다. 바울은 폭풍이 휩쓸고 간 듯한 고린도교회 신자들을 포함한 모든 신자들에게 이런 사랑을 촉구했습니다. 갈등과 부패, 죄악에 괴롭힘을 당했던 바울은 그들에게 이렇게 강력히 권고했습니다. “깨어 있으십시오. 믿음에 굳게 서 있으십시오. 용감하십시오. 힘을 내십시오”(고린도전서 16:13, 새번역). 그러고 나서 그는 이렇게 덧붙였습니다. “너희 모든 일을 사랑으로 행하라”(14절).

이것은 예수님을 믿는 모든 신자들에게 주어진 엄숙한 명령입니다. 특히 위기의 순간에 처했을 때 더 그렇습니다. 삶의 풍랑이 우리를 위협할 때 가장 멋진 대응방법은 그리스도를 드러내면서 다른 사람들에게 그분의 사랑을 베푸는 것입니다.

왜 이타적인 사랑이 예수님을 나타냅니까? 예수님의 사랑은 당신이 격동하는 상황을 대하는 방식에 어떻게 영향을 미칩니까?

<예수님, 제가 종종 용감하지 못하다고 느낄 때, 담대히 사랑을 베풀 수 있도록 용기를 북돋워 주소서.>

10.  디모데가 이르거든 너희는 조심하여 그로 두려움이 없이 너희 가운데 있게 하라 이는 그도 나와 같이 주의 일을 힘쓰는 자임이라 11.  그러므로 누구든지 그를 멸시하지 말고 평안히 보내어 내게로 오게 하라 나는 그가 형제들과 함께 오기를 기다리노라 12.  형제 아볼로에 대하여는 그에게 형제들과 함께 너희에게 가라고 내가 많이 권하였으되 지금은 갈 뜻이 전혀 없으나 기회가 있으면 가리라 13.  깨어 믿음에 굳게 서서 남자답게 강건하라 14.  너희 모든 일을 사랑으로 행하라

💙 Brave Love

"Do everything in love." [ 1 CORINTHIANS 16:14 ]

The four chaplains weren’t known as “heroes.” But on a frigid February night in 1943, when their transport ship, the SS Dorchester, was torpedoed off the coast of Greenland during World War II, the four gave their all to calm hundreds of panicked soldiers. With the ship sinking and injured men jumping for overcrowded lifeboats, the four chaplains calmed the pandemonium by “preaching courage,” a survivor said.

When life jackets ran out, each took his off, giving it to a frightened young man. They had determined to go down with the ship so that others might live. Said one survivor, “It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven.”

Linking arms as the ship began to sink, the chaplains prayed aloud together, offering encouragement to those perishing with them.

Bravery marks their saga. Love, however, defines the gift the four offered. Paul urged such love of all believers, including those in the storm-tossed church at Corinth. Roiled by conflict, corruption, and sin, Paul urged them to “be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong” (1 CORINTHIANS 16:13). Then he added, “Do everything in love” (V. 14).

It’s a sterling command for every believer in Jesus, especially during a crisis. In life, when upheaval threatens, our bravest response reflects Christ—giving to others His love. PATRICIA RAYBON

10.  If Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord, just as I am. 11.  No one, then, should refuse to accept him. Send him on his way in peace so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers. 12.  Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was quite unwilling to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity. 13.  Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. 14.  Do everything in love.
