"너희는 내게 배우고 받고 듣고 본 바를 행하라"[빌립보서 4:9]

아들의 수학 숙제를 도와주면서 보니, 그가 어떤 한 개념과 관련된 곱셈 문제들을 푸는 것을 재미없어 하는 게 분명해 보였습니다. 아들은 내가 그의 모든 숙제를 그만두게 해주기를 바라는 마음에, “아빠, 알아요!” 라고 고집을 부렸습니다. 그래서 나는 하나의 개념을 실제로 어떻게 적용할지 알기 전까지는 단지 하나의 개념에 지나지 않는다고 차분히 설명해주었습니다.

바울 사도는 빌립보에 있는 그의 친구들에게 행함에 대해서 이야기하면서 “너희는 내게 배우고 받고 듣고 본 바를 행하라”(빌립보서 4:9)고 썼습니다. 그는 다섯 가지를 언급합니다. 유오디아와 순두게에게 ‘화해’를 권하고(2-3절), 편지를 읽는 이들에게 ‘기뻐하라’고 하며(4절), 세상 사람들과의 관계에서 ‘관용’을 베풀라고 했습니다(5절). 또한 직접적으로, 그리고 서면으로 그들에게 ‘기도’의 모범을 보이고(6-7절), 감옥에서조차 ‘집중’하는 모습을 보여주었습니다 (8절). 화해와 기쁨, 관용, 기도, 그리고 집중. 이것들은 우리가 예수님을 믿는 신자로서 살면서 실행해야 할 것들입니다. 어떤 습관과 마찬가지로, 이런 미덕들도 자라나기 위해서는 먼저 행해져야 합니다.

그러나 바울이 이미 빌립보 사람들에게 말했듯이, 복음의 좋은 소식은 “너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하신다”(2:13)는 것입니다. 결코 우리 자신의 힘으로 행하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리에게 필요한 것을 하나님께서 공급해 주실 것입니다(4:19).

예수님을 닮아가려면 무엇을 실천해야 할까요? 어떻게 성령님이 주시는 힘으로 행할 수 있을까요?

<예수님, 성령님의 힘으로 주님의 일들을 실천할 수 있는 은혜를 주시고, 성령의 열매를 맺을 수 있는 삶을 살 수 있도록 힘을 더해 주소서.>

1. 그러므로 나의 사랑하고 사모하는 형제들, 나의 기쁨이요 면류관인 사랑하는 자들아 이와 같이 주 안에 서라 2. ○내가 유오디아를 권하고 순두게를 권하노니 주 안에서 같은 마음을 품으라 3. 또 참으로 나와 멍에를 같이한 네게 구하노니 복음에 나와 함께 힘쓰던 저 여인들을 돕고 또한 글레멘드와 그 외에 나의 동역자들을 도우라 그 이름들이 생명책에 있느니라 4. ○주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라 5. 너희 관용을 모든 사람에게 알게 하라 주께서 가까우시니라 6. 아무 것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라 7. 그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라 8. ○끝으로 형제들아 무엇에든지 참되며 무엇에든지 경건하며 무엇에든지 옳으며 무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 사랑 받을 만하며 무엇에든지 칭찬 받을 만하며 무슨 덕이 있든지 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하라 9. 너희는 내게 배우고 받고 듣고 본 바를 행하라 그리하면 평강의 하나님이 너희와 함께 계시리라

✝  Philippians 4:1 – 4:9

"Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice."[ PHILIPPIANS 4:9 ]

As I helped my son with his math homework, it became apparent he was less than enthusiastic about doing multiple problems related to the same concept. “I’ve got it, Dad!” he insisted, hoping I would let him out of doing all of his assignment.

I then gently explained to him that a concept is just a concept until we learn how to work it out in practice.

Paul wrote about practice to his friends in Philippi. “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me— put it into practice” (PHILIPPIANS 4:9). He mentions five things: reconciliation—as he urged Euodia and Syntyche to do (VV. 2–3); joy—as he reminded his readers to cultivate (V. 4); gentleness—as he urged them to employ in their relation to the world (V. 5); prayer—as he had modeled for them in person and in writing (VV. 6–7); and focus—as he had shown even in prison (V. 8). Reconciliation, joy, gentleness, prayer, and focus—things we’re called to live out as believers in Jesus. Like any habit, these virtues must be practiced in order to be cultivated.

But the good news of the gospel, as Paul had already told the Philippians, is that “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (2:13). We’re never practicing in our own power. God will provide what we need (4:19).

1. Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends! 2. I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. 3. Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things. 9. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
