 크리스마스의 경외

♡ 히브리서 1:1 - 1:9 

“ 하나님의 모든 천사들은 그에게 경배할지어다 “[히브리서 1:6]

어느 날 밤 나는 회의 참석을 위해 런던에 갔었는데 퍼붓는 비로 회의에 늦게되었습니다. 그래서 서둘러 걸으며 한 모퉁이를 돌았는데 그 자리에 멈춰 서 버리고 말았습니다. 

수십 개의 천사가 리젠트 거리 위를 맴돌며 도로를 가로질러 반짝이는 거대한 날개를 펼치고있었기 때문이었습니다. 

수천 개의 점멸등이 반짝이는 그 크리스마스 장식은 이제껏 내가 본 것 중 가장 놀라운 것이었습니다. 나만 사로잡힌 것이 아니라, 수백 명의 사람들이 줄지어 서서 경외심에 찬 눈으로 올려다보고 있었습니다. 

경외심은 크리스마스 이야기에서 가장 중요한 부분입니다. 천사가 나타나 마리아에게 기적으로 잉태할 것을 설명하고(누가복음 1:26-38) 목자들에게도 나타나 예수님의 탄생을 알렸을 때(2:8-20), 그들은 두려움과 놀라움, 그리고 ‘경외심’을 드러냈습니다. 

리젠트 거리의 사람들을 둘러보던 나는 천사를 처음 만났던 그 사람들이 느꼈던 기분이 바로 이런 게 아니었을까 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

그런데 잠시 후 더 굉장한 것이 있었습니다. 천사 중 몇몇이 그들도 무언가를 올려다보는 것처럼 팔을 치켜들었습니다. 

예수님에 대한 이야기를 듣고 우렁찬 노래를 시작한 천사의 합창단처럼(13-14절), 여기 천사들도 주님을 바라보며 경외감에 사로잡힐 수 있는 것 같습니다.

“그 아들은 하나님의 영광의 광채시며 하나님의 본성을 그대로 나타내시는 분입니다”(히브리서 1:3, 현대인의 성경). 밝고 빛나는 예수님을 모든 천사들이 주목하여 바라보고 있습니다(6절). 천사를 주제로 한 크리스마스 장식이 바쁜 런던 사람들의 발걸음을 멈추게 할 수 있다면, 우리가 예수님을 직접 보는 그 순간은 어떨지 상상해 보십시오.

마지막으로 경외감을 느낀 게 언제입니까? 

이번 크리스마스에 예수님에 대한 경외감을 어떻게 다시 불러일으킬 수 있을까요?

< 하나님 아버지, 하나님을 경배합니다. 놀라운 당신의 아들 예수님을 선물로 주셔서 감사합니다. >

1. 옛적에 선지자들을 통하여 여러 부분과 여러 모양으로 우리 조상들에게 말씀하신 하나님이

2. 이 모든 날 마지막에는 아들을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하셨으니 이 아들을 만유의 상속자로 세우시고 또 그로 말미암아 모든 세계를 지으셨느니라

3. 이는 하나님의 영광의 광채시요 그 본체의 형상이시라 그의 능력의 말씀으로 만물을 붙드시며 죄를 정결하게 하는 일을 하시고 높은 곳에 계신 지극히 크신 이의 우편에 앉으셨느니라

4. 그가 천사보다 훨씬 뛰어남은 그들보다 더욱 아름다운 이름을 기업으로 얻으심이니

5. 하나님께서 어느 때에 천사 중 누구에게 너는 내 아들이라 오늘 내가 너를 낳았다 하셨으며 또 다시 나는 그에게 아버지가 되고 그는 내게 아들이 되리라 하셨느냐

6. 또 그가 맏아들을 이끌어 세상에 다시 들어오게 하실 때에 하나님의 모든 천사들은 그에게 경배할지어다 말씀하시며

7. 또 천사들에 관하여는 그는 그의 천사들을 바람으로, 그의 사역자들을 불꽃으로 삼으시느니라 하셨으되

8. 아들에 관하여는 하나님이여 주의 보좌는 영영하며 주의 나라의 규는 공평한 규이니이다

9. 주께서 의를 사랑하시고 불법을 미워하셨으니 그러므로 하나님 곧 주의 하나님이 즐거움의 기름을 주께 부어 주를 동류들보다 뛰어나게 하셨도다 하였고

 CHRISTMAS AWE

♡ Hebrews 1:1 - 1:9 

“ Let all God’s angels worship him. “[ HEBREWS 1:6 ]

I was in London one night for a meeting. It was pouring rain, and I was late. I rushed through the streets, turned a corner, and then stopped still. Dozens of angels hovered above Regent Street, their giant shimmering wings stretching across the traffic. 

Made of thousands of pulsing lights, it was the most amazing Christmas display I’d seen. I wasn’t the only one captivated.

Hundreds lined the street, gazing up in awe. 

Awe is central to the Christmas story. When the angel appeared to Mary explaining she would miraculously conceive (LUKE 1:26–38), and to the shepherds announcing Jesus’ birth (2:8–20), each reacted with fear, wonder—and awe. 

Looking around at that Regent Street crowd, I wondered if we were experiencing in part what those first angelic encounters felt like.

A moment later, I noticed something else. Some of the angels had their arms raised, as if they too were gazing up at something. Like the angelic choir that burst into song at the mention of Jesus (VV. 13–14), it seems angels too can be caught up in awe—as they gaze on Him.

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being” (HEBREWS 1:3). Bright and luminous, Jesus is the focus of every angel’s gaze (V. 6). If an angel-themed Christmas display can stop busy Londoners in their tracks, just imagine the moment when we see Him face-to-face. 

When was the last time you felt a sense of awe? 

How can you rekindle a sense of awe over Jesus this Christmastime?

< Father, I worship You. Thank You for the gift of Your awesome Son. >

1. In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,

2. but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

3. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

4. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

5. For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"?

6. And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."

7. In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire."

8. But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.

9. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."
