True Greatness(참된 위대함)
True Greatness
"Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant."
(Mark 10:43)
Some people feel like a small pebble lost in the immensity of the Grand Canyon. But no matter how insignificant we judge ourselves to be, we can be greatly used by God.
In a sermon early in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. quoted Jesus' words from Mark 10 about servanthood. Then he said, "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. . . . You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love."
When Jesus' disciples quarreled about who would get the places of honor in heaven, He told them: "Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many"
(Mark 10:43-45).
I wonder about us. Is that our understanding of greatness?
Are we gladly serving, doing tasks that may be unnoticed? Is the purpose of our serving to please our Lord, rather than to gain the applause of people? If we are willing to be a servant, we can achieve true greatness.

참된 위대함
“누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고” (마가복음 10:43)
● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
어떤 사람들은 자신을 광대한 그랜드 캐년의 가운데에 내버려진 하나의 작은 조약돌 같은 존재처럼 느낍니다. 그러나 우리는 아무리 자신을 가치없는 존재로 생각하더라도 하나님에 의해 크게 쓰임 받을 수 있습니다.
마틴 루터 킹 목사는 1968년 초 그의 설교에서 예수님이 마가복음 10장에서 섬김에 대하여 하신 말씀을 인용했습니다. 그리고는 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “누구나 위대한 사람이 될 수 있습니다. 누구나 섬길 수 있기 때문입니다. 섬기기 위해서는 대학을 나오지 않아도 됩니다. 섬기기 위해서 문법에 맞는 말만 해야할 필요도 없습니다. 섬기기 위해서는 플라톤이나 아리스토텔레스를 몰라도 됩니다… 섬기는 데는 은혜가 충만한 마음, 사랑으로 빚어진 영혼만이 필요한 것입니다.”
예수님의 제자들이 천국에서 누가 영광의 자리에 앉을 것인가를 놓고 서로 다툴 때에 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 모든 사람의 종이 되어야 하리라. 인자의 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라”(막 10:43-45).
나는 우리들에 대해 생각해봅니다. 우리는 과연 이것을 위대한 것이라 생각하는지요? 우리는 드러나지 않을 일들을 하면서도 기쁨으로 섬기고 있는지요? 우리가 섬기는 목적은 사람들의 칭찬을 받는 것보다 주님을 기쁘시게 하는 것인지요? 우리는 기꺼이 섬기는 자가 되고자 할 때에 참된 위대함을 이룰 수 있습니다.
● 오늘의 묵상 ●
하찮은 섬김이란 없습니다.
이 땅을 다 섬기는 일이라고 해서 더 위대한 것은 아닙니다.
그러나 섬김이 자신을 위한 것일 땐 작을 수밖에 없고
하나님의 뜻을 이룰 땐 커집니다.
