 What Money Can’t Buy

There are some things money can’t buy─but these days, not many”according to Michael Sandel, author of What Money Can’t Buy. A person can buy a prison-cell upgrade for a night, the right to shoot an endangered black rhino for 0,000, and your doctor’s cell phone number for ,500. It seems that “almost everything is up for sale.”

But one thing money can’t buy is redemption─freedom from the stranglehold of sin. When the apostle Paul began writing about the rich nature of God’s plan of salvation through Jesus, his heart erupted in praise: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us”(Eph.1:7-8).

Jesus’death on the cross was the high cost of delivering us from sin. And only He could pay that price because He was the perfect Son of God. The natural response to such free but costly grace is spontaneous praise from our hearts and commitment to the God who bought us through Jesus (1:13-14).

Ephesians 1:3-14

[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
[4] just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
[5] having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
[6] to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved.
[7] In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
[8] which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,
[9] having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself,
[10] that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him.
[11] In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,
[12] that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.
[13] In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
[14] who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

돈으로 살 수 없는 것

말씀 읽기:
에베소서 1:3 - 1:14

" 우리는 그리스도 안에서 그의 은혜의 풍성함을 따라 그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄 사함을 받았느니라 "
( 에베소서 1:7 )

“돈으로 살 수 없는 것들이 있는데, 요즘엔 극소수에 지나지 않습니다.”라고 《돈으로 살 수 없는 것》이라는 책의 저자 마이클 샌들은 말합니다. 형무소에서 하룻밤에 90불을 주면 더 좋은 감방으로 옮길 수 있고, 25만 불을 주면 멸종 위기에 있는 흑코뿔소를 사냥할 수 있는 권리를 살 수 있으며, 1,500불을 주면 당신 주치의의 휴대전화 번호를 살 수 있습니다. “거의 모든 것이 팔려고 내놓은 것”처럼 보입니다.

그러나 죄의 속박으로부터 자유롭게 해주는 ‘속량’만은 돈으로 살 수 없습니다. 사도 바울은 예수님을 통한 하나님의 구속계획에 대한 엄청난 내용을 쓰기 시작했을 때, 그의 가슴으로부터 “우리는 그리스도 안에서 그의 은혜의 풍성함을 따라 그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄 사함을 받았느니라 이는 그가 모든 지혜와 총명을 우리에게 넘치게 하사”(엡 1:7-8)라는 찬양이 터져 나왔습니다.

우리를 죄에서 구원하시기 위한 엄청난 대가를 치르기 위해 예수님이 십자가에서 돌아가셨습니다. 주님은 하나님의 완전한 아들이시기에 오직 주님만이 그 값을 치르실 수 있었습니다. 값없이 주어진 것이지만 이미 큰 대가를 치른 그 은혜에 대해 우리는 자발적으로 솟아나는 찬양으로, 그리고 예수님을 통해 우리를 속량하신 하나님께 대한 헌신으로 우리의 반응이 자연스럽게 흘러나와야 합니다(1:13-14).

우리를 사랑하시는 하나님을 찬양합시다. 주님은 우리를 죄에서 해방시키시기 위해 오셨습니다!


하늘에 계신 아버지, 하나님은 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지요!
하나님은 당신의 아들을 주셔서
우리를 대신해 기꺼이 죽게 하셨습니다.
도무지 믿어지지가 않습니다. 감사할 뿐입니다!
< 오직 예수님의 죽음만이 우리의 자유를 살 수 있다. >
