💙 반대와 맞서 하나님을 신뢰함

✝  다니엘 3:13-18, 25-27

그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도… 우리가 왕의 신들을 섬기지도 아니하고 왕이 세우신 금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서 [다니엘 3:18]

기독교 신앙을 반대하는 필리핀의 한 부족에서 자란 에스더는 죽을 병과 싸우고 있는 동안 숙모의 기도로 예수님을 믿어 구원을 받았습니다. 이제 에스더는 폭력과 목숨의 위협에도 불구하고 마을에서 성경공부를 인도하고 있습니다. 그녀는 성경공부를 기쁨으로 섬기면서 이렇게 고백합니다. “하나님의 권능과 사랑, 선하심, 그리고 신실하심을 내 삶에서 경험했기에 예수님에 대해 이야기하지 않을 수 없어요.”

오늘날 많은 사람들이 옛날 바벨론에서 포로 생활을 하던 유다의 세 젊은이 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고처럼 반대에 맞서서 하나님을 섬기고 있습니다. 다니엘서를 보면 그들은 죽음의 위협을 당했을 때에도 느부갓네살 왕의 모습으로 만든 큰 금상에 절하기를 거부했습니다. 그들은 하나님이 자신들을 보호하실 수 있으며, 만약 “그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도”(다니엘 3:18) 하나님을 섬기겠다고 단호한 태도를 보였습니다. 그들이 풀무불 가운데로 던져졌을 때 하나님은 실제로 그들의 고난과 함께 하셨습니다(25절). 놀랍게도 그들은 “머리털도 그을리지” 않고 살아남았습니다(27절).

우리가 믿음의 행위 때문에 고난이나 박해를 겪을 때, 결과가 비록 우리가 바라던 바와 달리 나타난다 해도 하나님께 순종하겠다고 결심하면, 우리를 강하게 하시고 지탱시켜 주시는 성령님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 과거와 현재의 여러 사례들을 통해 알 수 있습니다.

당신은 “그렇게 하지 않으실지라도” 하나님을 따르기로 선택한 경우들이 있습니까? 하나님께서 그때 어떻게 함께 하셨습니까?

<하나님, 저를 아낌없이 사랑해 주셔서 감사합니다. 설령 반대에 부딪혀도 기쁨으로 하나님을 따르도록 도와주소서.>

13. 느부갓네살 왕이 노하고 분하여 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 끌어오라 말하매 드디어 그 사람들을 왕의 앞으로 끌어온지라 14. 느부갓네살이 그들에게 물어 이르되 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고야 너희가 내 신을 섬기지 아니하며 내가 세운 금 신상에게 절하지 아니한다 하니 사실이냐 15. 이제라도 너희가 준비하였다가 나팔과 피리와 수금과 삼현금과 양금과 생황과 및 모든 악기 소리를 들을 때 내가 만든 신상 앞에 엎드려 절하면 좋거니와 너희가 만일 절하지 아니하면 즉시 너희를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 던져 넣을 것이니 능히 너희를 내 손에서 건져낼 신이 누구이겠느냐 하니 16. 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 왕에게 대답하여 이르되 느부갓네살이여 우리가 이 일에 대하여 왕에게 대답할 필요가 없나이다 17. 왕이여 우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 18. 그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도 왕이여 우리가 왕의 신들을 섬기지도 아니하고 왕이 세우신 금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서 25. 왕이 또 말하여 이르되 내가 보니 결박되지 아니한 네 사람이 불 가운데로 다니는데 상하지도 아니하였고 그 넷째의 모양은 신들의 아들과 같도다 하고 26. 느부갓네살이 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 아귀 가까이 가서 불러 이르되 지극히 높으신 하나님의 종 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고야 나와서 이리로 오라 하매 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 불 가운데에서 나온지라 27. 총독과 지사와 행정관과 왕의 모사들이 모여 이 사람들을 본즉 불이 능히 그들의 몸을 해하지 못하였고 머리털도 그을리지 아니하였고 겉옷 빛도 변하지 아니하였고 불 탄 냄새도 없었더라

 

💙 Trusting God In Opposition

But even if he does not . . .we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. [ DANIEL 3:18 ]

Raised in a tribe in the Philippines opposed to belief in Christ, Esther received salvation through Jesus after an aunt prayed for her during Esther’s battle with a life-threatening illness. Today, Esther leads Bible studies in her local community in spite of threats of violence and even death. She serves joyfully, saying, “I can’t stop telling people about Jesus because I’ve experienced the power, love, goodness, and faithfulness of God in my life.”

Serving God in the face of opposition is a reality for many today just as it was for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three young Israelites living in captivity in Babylon. In the book of Daniel, we learn that they refused to pray to a large golden image of King Nebuchadnezzar even when threatened with death. The men testified that God was capable of protecting them, but they chose to serve Him “even if” He didn’t rescue them (DANIEL 3:18). When they were thrown into the fire, God actually joined them in their suffering (V. 25). To everyone’s amazement, they survived without even “a hair of their heads singed” (V. 27).

If we face suffering or persecution for an act of faith, ancient and modern examples remind us that God’s Spirit is present with us to strengthen and sustain us when we choose to obey Him, “even if” things turn out differently than we hope. LISA M. SAMRA

13. Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14. and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? 15. Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?" 16. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.“ 25. He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." 26. Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27. and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
