💙 큰 용사

“ 큰 용사여 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시도다 “[사사기 6:12]

1940년 독일이 네덜란드를 침공했을 때, 디트 이먼은 사랑하고 일하면서 가족과 친구들과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었던 한 평범하고 수줍음 많은 젊은 여성이었습니다.

나중에 디트가 쓴 것처럼, “위험이 코앞에 닥치니 마치 타조가 머리를 모래에 묻는 것처럼 행동하고 싶어집니다.”

하지만 디트는 독일 압제자들에게 저항하라는 하나님의 부르심을 느끼고 생명의 위험을 무릅쓰고 유대인과 다른 쫓기는 사람들이 은신처를 찾는 일을 도와주었습니다. 이 겸손한 젊은 여인이 하나님의 용사가 된 것입니다.

우리는 성경에서 디트와 같이 겉보기에 하나님을 섬길 것 같지 않은 인물을 하나님께서 사용하시는 이야기를 많이 봅니다. 예를 들어, 하나님의 천사가 기드온에게 다가가서 “큰 용사여 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시도다” (사사기 6:12)라고 선포했을 때 기드온은 전혀 강해 보이지 않았습니다.

그는 당시 이스라엘을 억압하며 지배하고 있었던 미디안 족속의 눈을 피해 숨어서 밀을 타작하고 있었습니다(1-6, 11절).  그는 이스라엘에서 가장 약한 므낫세 지파 출신이며 집안에서도 “가장 작은” 자였습니다(15절).

그는 하나님의 부르심에 마음이 내키지 않았으며, 그래서 ‘여러 가지’ 징표를 요구하기까지 했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 잔인한 미디안 사람들을 치기 위해 그를 사용하셨습니다(7장 참조).

하나님은 기드온을 “큰” 인물로 보셨습니다. 기드온과 함께하시고 힘을 주셨던 것처럼, 하나님은 그분의 “사랑을 받는 자녀”(에베소서 5:1)인 우리와도 함께하셔서 크고 작은 일에 하나님을 위해 살고 섬기는 데 필요한 모든 것을 공급해 주십니다.

연약하지만 하나님께서 큰일을 위해 사용하신 성경 속 인물에는 또 누가 있습니까?

하나님은 어떻게 당신을 안전지역 밖으로 옮겨 그분을 섬기게 하셨습니까?

<하나님, 제가 보는 것처럼 저를 보지 않으시니 감사합니다. 하나님을 섬기는 크고 작은 일을 할 수 있는 하나님의 사랑받는 자녀로 저 자신을 볼 수 있게 하소서.>

11. ○여호와의 사자가 아비에셀 사람 요아스에게 속한 오브라에 이르러 상수리나무 아래에 앉으니라 마침 요아스의 아들 기드온이 미디안 사람에게 알리지 아니하려 하여 밀을 포도주 틀에서 타작하더니 12. 여호와의 사자가 기드온에게 나타나 이르되 큰 용사여 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시도다 하매 13. 기드온이 그에게 대답하되 오 나의 주여 여호와께서 우리와 함께 계시면 어찌하여 이 모든 일이 우리에게 일어났나이까 또 우리 조상들이 일찍이 우리에게 이르기를 여호와께서 우리를 애굽에서 올라오게 하신 것이 아니냐 한 그 모든 이적이 어디 있나이까 이제 여호와께서 우리를 버리사 미디안의 손에 우리를 넘겨 주셨나이다 하니 14. 여호와께서 그를 향하여 이르시되 너는 가서 이 너의 힘으로 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하라 내가 너를 보낸 것이 아니냐 하시니라 15. 그러나 기드온이 그에게 대답하되 오 주여 내가 무엇으로 이스라엘을 구원하리이까 보소서 나의 집은 므낫세 중에 극히 약하고 나는 내 아버지 집에서 가장 작은 자니이다 하니 16. 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 내가 반드시 너와 함께 하리니 네가 미디안 사람 치기를 한 사람을 치듯 하리라 하시니

 

💙 MIGHTY WARRIOR

"The Lord is with you, mighty warrior." [ JUDGES 6:12 ]

Diet Eman was an ordinary, shy young woman in the Netherlands—in love, working, and enjoying time with family and friends—when the Germans invaded in 1940.

As Diet (pronounced Deet) later wrote, “When there is danger on your doorstep, you want to act almost like an ostrich burying its head in the sand.” Yet Diet felt God calling her to resist the German oppressors, which included risking her life to find hiding places for Jews and other pursued people. This unassuming young woman became a warrior for God.

We find many stories in the Bible similar to Diet’s, stories of God using seemingly unlikely characters to serve Him. For instance, when the angel of the Lord approached Gideon, he proclaimed, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior” (JUDGES 6:12). Yet Gideon seemed anything but mighty. He’d been secretly threshing wheat away from the prying eyes of the Midianites, who oppressively controlled Israel at the time (VV. 1–6, 11). He was from the weakest clan of Israel (Manasseh) and the “least” in his family (V. 15). He didn’t feel up to God’s calling and even requested several signs. Yet God used him to defeat the cruel Midianites (SEE CH. 7).

God saw Gideon as “mighty.” And just as God was with and equipped Gideon, so God is with us, His “dearly loved children” (EPHESIANS 5:1)—supplying all we need to live for and serve Him in little and big ways. ALYSON KIED

11. The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12. When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior." 13. "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, `Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian." 14. The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?" 15. "But Lord," Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." 16. The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.
