“히스기야가 낯을 벽으로 향하고 여호와께 기도하여 이르되”[열왕기하 20:2]

1964년 젊은 환경운동가 잭 와인버그는 “서른이 넘은 사람은 누구든 절대 믿지 말라.”고 말했습니다. 와인버그의 이 말은 한 세대 사람들에 대한 고정관념을 심어 주었는데 그는 나중에 이 말에 대해 후회했습니다. 그는 회고하면서 “내 머리에 문득 떠올라 말한 것이... 완전히 왜곡되고 오해를 불러일으켰다.”고 말했습니다.

밀레니엄 세대를 폄하하는 말을 들어본 적이 있습니까? 혹은 그 반대는요? 다른 세대를 향한 그릇된 생각 때문에 세대 간의 통로가 막힐 수 있습니다. 분명히 더 잘 할 수 있는 방법도 있는데 말입니다.

히스기야는 훌륭한 왕이었지만 다음 세대에 대해서는 관심이 부족했습니다. 젊은 시절 히스기야가 불치병에 걸렸을 때(열왕기하 20:1) 그는 하나님께 살려 달라고 부르짖었습니다(2-3절). 그래서 하나님은 그에게 15년의 삶을 더해 주셨습니다(6절).

그러나 히스기야는 그의 자녀들이 언젠가 포로로 잡힐 것이라는 무서운 소식을 듣고도 눈물 한 방울 흘리지 않았습니다(16-18절). 그는 “적어도 자기 시대에는 평화와 안전이 있을 것”(19절, 현대인의 성경)이라고 생각했습니다. 히스기야는 자신의 안위에 쏟은 열정을 다음 세대를 위해서는 보여주지 못한 것 같습니다.

하나님은 우리를 나누는 세대 간의 벽을 넘어 사랑하라고 하십니다. 나이 든 세대에게는 젊은 세대의 참신한 이상주의와 창의성이 필요하며, 반대로 젊은 세대는 윗 세대의 지혜와 경험에서 도움을 받을 수 있습니다. 서로를 비난하는 메시지나 슬로건이 아니라, 사려 깊게 생각들을 주고받는 것이 필요한 때입니다. 우리는 이 일에 함께 해야 합니다.

당신은 어떤 식으로 다른 세대를 무시했거나 무례히 대했다고 생각합니까?

하나님께서 당신에게 주신 재능을 다른 세대를 위해 어떻게 사용할 수 있을까요?

<하나님 아버지, 나와는 다른 세대들을 존중하지 않은 것을 용서하소서.>

1. 그 때에 히스기야가 병들어 죽게 되매 아모스의 아들 선지자 이사야가 그에게 나아와서 그에게 이르되 여호와의 말씀이 너는 집을 정리하라 네가 죽고 살지 못하리라 하셨나이다 2. 히스기야가 낯을 벽으로 향하고 여호와께 기도하여 이르되 3. 여호와여 구하오니 내가 진실과 전심으로 주 앞에 행하며 주께서 보시기에 선하게 행한 것을 기억하옵소서 하고 히스기야가 심히 통곡하더라 4. 이사야가 성읍 가운데까지도 이르기 전에 여호와의 말씀이 그에게 임하여 이르시되 5. 너는 돌아가서 내 백성의 주권자 히스기야에게 이르기를 왕의 조상 다윗의 하나님 여호와의 말씀이 내가 네 기도를 들었고 네 눈물을 보았노라 내가 너를 낫게 하리니 네가 삼 일 만에 여호와의 성전에 올라가겠고 6. 내가 네 날에 십오 년을 더할 것이며 내가 너와 이 성을 앗수르 왕의 손에서 구원하고 내가 나를 위하고 또 내 종 다윗을 위하므로 이 성을 보호하리라 하셨다 하라 하셨더라 7. 이사야가 이르되 무화과 반죽을 가져오라 하매 무리가 가져다가 그 상처에 놓으니 나으니라 8. ○히스기야가 이사야에게 이르되 여호와께서 나를 낫게 하시고 삼 일 만에 여호와의 성전에 올라가게 하실 무슨 징표가 있나이까 하니 9. 이사야가 이르되 여호와께서 하신 말씀을 응하게 하실 일에 대하여 여호와께로부터 왕에게 한 징표가 임하리이다 해 그림자가 십도를 나아갈 것이니이까 혹 십도를 물러갈 것이니이까 하니 10. 히스기야가 대답하되 그림자가 십도를 나아가기는 쉬우니 그리할 것이 아니라 십도가 뒤로 물러갈 것이니이다 하니라 11. 선지자 이사야가 여호와께 간구하매 아하스의 해시계 위에 나아갔던 해 그림자를 십도 뒤로 물러가게 하셨더라 12. ○그 때에 발라단의 아들 바벨론의 왕 브로닥발라단이 히스기야가 병 들었다 함을 듣고 편지와 예물을 그에게 보낸지라 13. 히스기야가 사자들의 말을 듣고 자기 보물고의 금은과 향품과 보배로운 기름과 그의 군기고와 창고의 모든 것을 다 사자들에게 보였는데 왕궁과 그의 나라 안에 있는 모든 것 중에서 히스기야가 그에게 보이지 아니한 것이 없더라 14. 선지자 이사야가 히스기야 왕에게 나아와 그에게 이르되 이 사람들이 무슨 말을 하였으며 어디서부터 왕에게 왔나이까 히스기야가 이르되 먼 지방 바벨론에서 왔나이다 하니 15. 이사야가 이르되 그들이 왕궁에서 무엇을 보았나이까 하니 히스기야가 대답하되 내 궁에 있는 것을 그들이 다 보았나니 나의 창고에서 하나도 보이지 아니한 것이 없나이다 하더라 16. ○이사야가 히스기야에게 이르되 여호와의 말씀을 들으소서 17. 여호와의 말씀이 날이 이르리니 왕궁의 모든 것과 왕의 조상들이 오늘까지 쌓아 두었던 것이 바벨론으로 옮긴 바 되고 하나도 남지 아니할 것이요 18. 또 왕의 몸에서 날 아들 중에서 사로잡혀 바벨론 왕궁의 환관이 되리라 하셨나이다 하니 19. 히스기야가 이사야에게 이르되 당신이 전한 바 여호와의 말씀이 선하니이다 하고 또 이르되 만일 내가 사는 날에 태평과 진실이 있을진대 어찌 선하지 아니하리요 하니라

“ Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord. “[ 2 KINGS 20:2 ]

“Never trust anyone over thirty,” said young environmentalist Jack Weinberg in 1964. His comment stereotyped an entire generation—something Weinberg later regretted.Looking back, he said, “Something I said off the top of my head . . . became completely distorted and misunderstood.”

Have you heard disparaging comments aimed at millennials? Or vice versa? Ill thoughts directed from one generation toward another can cut both ways. Surely there’s a better way. 

Although he was an excellent king, Hezekiah showed a lack of concern for another generation. When, as a young man, Hezekiah was struck with a terminal illness (2 KINGS 20:1), he cried out to God for his life (VV. 2–3). God gave him fifteen more years (V. 6).

But when Hezekiah received the terrible news that his children would one day be taken captive, the royal tears were conspicuously absent (VV. 16–18). He thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?” (V. 19). It may have been that Hezekiah didn’t apply the passion he had for his own well-being to the next generation.

God calls us to a love that dares to cross the lines dividing us. The older generation needs the fresh idealism and creativity of the younger, who in turn can benefit from the wisdom and experience of their predecessors. This is no time for snarky memes and slogans but for thoughtful exchange of ideas. We’re in this together.   TIM GUSTAFSO

<Forgive me, Father, for not appreciating others in a stage of life different from mine.>

1.In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, "This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover." 2. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, 3. "Remember, O LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is  good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4. Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the LORD came to him: 5. "Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, `This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the     LORD. 6. I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.'" 7. Then Isaiah said, "Prepare a poultice of figs." They did so and applied it to the boil, and he recovered. 8. Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, "What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the LORD on the third day from now?" 9. Isaiah answered, "This is the LORD's sign to you that the LORD will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go       forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?" 10. "It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps," said Hezekiah. "Rather, have it go back ten steps." 11. Then the prophet Isaiah called upon the LORD, and the LORD made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz. 12. At that time Merodach-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah's illness. 13. Hezekiah received the messengers and showed them all that was in his storehouses -- the silver, the gold, the spices  and the fine oil -- his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them. 14. Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, "What did those men say, and where did they come from?" "From a distant land," Hezekiah replied. "They came from Babylon." 15. The prophet asked, "What did they see in your palace?" "They saw everything in my palace," Hezekiah said. "There is  nothing among my treasures that I did not show them." 16. Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD: 17. The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will  be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD. 18. And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood, that will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will  become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon." 19. "The word of the LORD you have spoken is good," Hezekiah replied. For he thought, "Will there not be peace and      security in my lifetime?"
