 A Deadly Weapon

" Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; ... they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. "
( Isaiah 40:31 )

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali used several ring tactics to defeat his opponents; one tactic was taunting. In his fight with George Foreman in 1974, Ali taunted Foreman, “Hit harder! Show me something, George. That don’t hurt. I thought you were supposed to be bad.” Fuming, Foreman punched away furiously, wasting his energy and weakening his confidence.

It’s an old tactic. By referring to Nehemiah’s efforts at rebuilding the broken wall of Jerusalem as nothing more than a fox’s playground (Neh.4:3), Tobiah intended to weaken the workers with poisonous words of discouragement. Goliath tried it on David by despising the boy’s simple weapons of a sling and stones (1 Sam.17:41-44).

A discouraging remark can be a deadly weapon. Nehemiah refused to surrender to Tobiah’s discouragements, just as David rejected Goliath’s diabolical teasing. Focusing on God and His help rather than on their discouraging situations, David and Nehemiah both achieved victory.

Taunting can come from anybody, including those who are close to us. Responding to them negatively only saps our energy. But God encourages us through His promises: He will never forsake us (Ps.9:10; Heb.13:5), and He invites us to rely on His help (Heb.4:16).


Lord, it’s easy to let discouragement sap my energy
and joy. Help me to reject all agents of discouragement in my life and to trust in You for comfort and strength.

Nehemiah 4:1-10

[1] But it so happened, when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, that he was furious and very indignant, and mocked the Jews.
[2] And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish--stones that are burned?"
[3] Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall."
[4] Hear, O our God, for we are despised; turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity!
[5] Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders.
[6] So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
[7] Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry,
[8] and all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion.
[9] Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.
[10] Then Judah said, "The strength of the laborers is failing, and there is so much rubbish that we are not able to build the wall."

 치명적인 무기

말씀 읽기 :
느헤미야 4:1 - 4:10

" 오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니…달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다 "
( 이사야 40:31)

전설적인 권투선수 무하마드 알리는 상대를 이기기 위해 여러 가지 전술들을 사용하였는데, 그중 하나가 조롱하기였습니다. 알리는 1974년 조지 포먼과의 시합에서 “더 세게 쳐! 조지, 뭔가를 보여줘야지. 그건 하나도 아프지 않아. 생각보다 별 거 아니네.”라고 하면서 그를 조롱하였습니다. 화가 난 포먼은 마구 주먹을 휘두르다가 자신의 힘을 낭비하고 자신감도 잃어버렸습니다.

이것은 예부터 내려온 전술입니다. 느헤미야가 무너진 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하려는 노력에 대해 도비야는 겨우 여우의 놀이터를 만드는데 불과하다는 독설을 내뱉으며(느 4:3) 일하는 사람들의 사기를 꺾으려 했습니다. 골리앗도 다윗이 들고 나온 단순한 무기인 물매와 조약돌을 멸시하면서 그 전술을 다윗에게 사용하였습니다(삼상 17:41-44).

낙담하게 하는 말은 치명적인 무기가 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 다윗이 골리앗의 굴욕적인 놀림을 무시한 것처럼 느헤미야도 단념하게 하려는 도비야의 시도에 굴복하지 않았습니다. 다윗과 느헤미야는 그들을 좌절하게 만드는 상황보다는 하나님과 그분의 도우심에 초점을 맞춤으로써 둘 다 승리할 수 있었습니다.

우리와 가까운 사람들을 포함하여 누구나 우리를 조롱할 수 있습니다. 그것에 부정적으로 대응하는 것은 단지 우리의 힘만 소진시킬 뿐입니다. 그러나 하나님은 결코 우리를 저버리지 않으신다(시 9:10; 히 13:5)는 그분의 약속과, 우리가 하나님의 도움을 의지하게 해주시겠다는(히 4:16) 그분의 약속을 통해 우리의 용기를 북돋워주십니다.


주님, 낙심 때문에 저의 힘과 기쁨이 쉽게 소진됩니다.
저의 삶 가운데 낙심하게 만드는 모든 요소들을 제거하고,
평안과 강건함을 위해
주님을 신뢰할 수 있도록 도와주소서.

느헤미야 4:1-10

[1] 산발랏이 우리가 성을 건축한다 함을 듣고 크게 분노하여 유다 사람들을 비웃으며
[2] 자기 형제들과 사마리아 군대 앞에서 일러 말하되 이 미약한 유다 사람들이 하는 일이 무엇인가, 스스로 견고하게 하려는가, 제사를 드리려는가, 하루에 일을 마치려는가 불탄 돌을 흙 무더기에서 다시 일으키려는가 하고
[3] 암몬 사람 도비야는 곁에 있다가 이르되 그들이 건축하는 돌 성벽은 여우가 올라가도 곧 무너지리라 하더라
[4] 우리 하나님이여 들으시옵소서 우리가 업신여김을 당하나이다 원하건대 그들이 욕하는 것을 자기들의 머리에 돌리사 노략거리가 되어 이방에 사로잡히게 하시고
[5] 주 앞에서 그들의 악을 덮어 두지 마시며 그들의 죄를 도말하지 마옵소서 그들이 건축하는 자 앞에서 주를 노하시게 하였음이니이다 하고
[6] 이에 우리가 성을 건축하여 전부가 연결되고 높이가 절반에 이르렀으니 이는 백성이 마음 들여 일을 하였음이니라
[7] 산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람들과 암몬 사람들과 아스돗 사람들이 예루살렘 성이 중수되어 그 허물어진 틈이 메꾸어져 간다 함을 듣고 심히 분노하여
[8] 다 함께 꾀하기를 예루살렘으로 가서 치고 그 곳을 요란하게 하자 하기로
[9] 우리가 우리 하나님께 기도하며 그들로 말미암아 파수꾼을 두어 주야로 방비하는데
[10] 유다 사람들은 이르기를 흙 무더기가 아직도 많거늘 짐을 나르는 자의 힘이 다 빠졌으니 우리가 성을 건축하지 못하리라 하고
