"Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore."
(Amos 7:8)

When I was a young boy, the kids in my neighborhood built a clubhouse. We were able to get the floor level, but we were having trouble making the sideboards fit because we didn't use a plumb line. The finished product looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Carpenters often use a plumb line to make sure walls are square with the floor. It is a string with a weight on it that hangs straight down to guide the builder when he puts up a wall.

In Amos 7, we read about another kind of plumb line. The Lord first told Amos about a swarm of locusts and a great fire, which were pictures foretelling the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel.
After the prophet prayed and the Lord agreed to delay His judgment, Amos was given a vision of a straight wall. The Lord was standing by it with a plumb line.
Because Israel's conduct didn't "square" with God's laws, they experienced God's wrath (vv.8-9).

As followers of Jesus Christ, we have a plumb line by which we can evaluate our lives. It is the Word of God with its principles and commands. When faced with moral choices, we must see what the Scriptures teach. When we follow the Lord's directives, we need not fear what His plumb line will reveal in our lives. - Dave Egner

"주께서 가라사대 내가 다림줄을 내 백성 이스라엘 가운데 베풀고 다시는 용서치 아니하리니" (아모스 7:8)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
나는 어렸을 때에 동네 아이들과 놀이집을 지었습니다. 우리는 바닥에 수평을 잡을 수는 있었으나 다림줄을 사용하지 않았기 때문에 벽을 바로 세우는데 어려움을 겪었습니다. 완성된 집은 마치 피사의 사탑처럼 기울어졌습니다.

목수들은 다림줄을 자주 사용하여 마루와 벽이 직각이 되었는지 확인을 합니다. 다림줄은 한쪽 끝에 추를 달아매어 수직이 되도록 만들어 목수가 벽을 설치할 때 기준이 됩니다.

아모스 7장에서 우리는 다른 종류의 다림줄을 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님께서는 처음에 아모스에게 메뚜기 떼와 북왕국 이스라엘의 파멸을 예시하는 큰 화재에 대하여 말씀하셨습니다. 선지자의 기도를 들으신 하나님은 그 심판을 미루기로 하셨습니다.
이어서 아모스는 곧은 벽의 환상을 보았습니다. 주님께서 그 벽에 다림줄을 가지고 서 계셨습니다. 이스라엘의 행위가 하나님의 법에 어긋났기 때문에 그들은 하나님의 진노를 겪게 되었습니다 (8-9절).

예수 그리스도의 제자로서 우리는 자신의 삶을 평가할 수 있는 다림줄을 가지고 있습니다. 그것은 원칙과 명령이 있는 하나님의 말씀입니다. 도덕적 결정을 내려야 할 때 우리는 반드시 성경이 가르치는 것이 무엇인지를 알아야 합니다.
우리가 하나님께서 지시하시는 대로만 따르면 나중에 하나님의 다림줄이 우리 삶 안에서 어떻게 나타나든지 두려워할 필요가 없습니다.
