  An Atheist's Bible 
 

"The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver." (Psalm 119:72)

She was the best-known atheist in the United States, perhaps in all the world. Madalyn Murray O'Hair was profane and aggressive, devoting herself to attacking all religion, and especially Christianity. Then, in 1995 at age 76, she mysteriously disappeared. Was she the victim of foul play or had she gone into hiding? Before evidence eventually pointed to a former associate as the murderer, the Internal Revenue Service seized her personal belongings to pay delinquent taxes and personal debts.Included in the IRS auction was a penny that had the words "In God We Trust" scratched out. That 1-cent piece sold for $10. Also included was a Bible, which sold for $2,000. As mere paper and ink, that Bible was worth at the most only a few dollars. But as the Word of God, which communicates the truth of saving grace, that Book was priceless, as is any edition of God's Word.
Do we, unlike those who deny God's existence, put our trust in Him and His Word? Do we agree with the psalmist who wrote, "The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver"? (Psalm 119:72). If we do, let's study Scripture, embrace its teachings, and obediently live out its truths.

“주의 입의 법이 내게는 천천 금은보다 승하니이다” (시편 119:72)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
매들린 머레이 오헤어는 미국에서 뿐 아니라 아마도 전 세계에서 가장 유명한 무신론자로서 신성을 무시하고 공격을 하였던 사람으로 모든 종교 가운데 특히 기독교를 공격하는데 일생을 보냈습니다. 그러던 그녀가 1995년 나이 76세 되던 해에 아무도 모르게 사라졌습니다. 범죄 행위에 희생된 것이었을까요, 아니면 스스로 숨어버린 것이었을까요? 차차 증거가 드러나면서 과거에 그녀의 동료였던 사람이 살인범으로 지목되었습니다. 그러나 그 이전에 세무당국은 체납된 세금과 개인적인 채무를 받아내기 위해 그녀의 사유물들을 압류하였습니다. 세무당국에서 경매한 그녀의 물건 중에는 동전 한 개가 있었는데 그것은 “우리는 하나님을 믿는다”라는 문구가 긁혀서 없어진 것이었습니다. 그 1센트짜리 동전은 10불에 팔렸습니다. 또 성경책이 한권 있었는데 그것은 2천불에 팔렸습니다. 종이와 잉크로서의 그 성경책의 가치는 기껏해야 몇 불 정도 밖에 안될 것입니다. 그러나 은혜로 구원을 받는다는 진리를 전하는 하나님 말씀으로서의 그녀의 성경책은 이 세상 어느 성경책이나 마찬가지로 무한한 가치가 있었습니다. 우리는 하나님의 계심을 부인하는 사람들과는 달리 하나님과 그의 말씀을 믿습니까? 우리는 “주의 입의 법이 내게는 천천 금은보다 승하니이다” (시 119:72) 라고 한 시편기자의 말에 동감을 합니까? 그렇다면 성경을 공부하며 그 가르침을 붙들고 진리를 따라 순 종하며 살아갑시다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
생각해 봅시다. 만약에 사람들이 당신을 일주일 동안 지켜 본다면 당신이 성경을 소중히 여기는 사람이라고 믿게 될까요? 그 답에 대한 근거는 어디에 있을까요?하나님 말씀을 당신이 사랑한다는 것을 어떻게 보여주겠습니까?
