  What Really Matters

"He who judges me is the Lord." (1 Corinthians 4:4)

In 1985, Frederick Holliday, the superintendent of Cleveland's public schools, shot himself through the heart with 0.357 magnum. In a suicide note he said that although he had achieved great success, he could not tolerate being stripped of his dignity by the unfair and vicious accusations leveled against him by his opponents. Taking his own life, though, left family and friends heartbroken. I wish that Holliday would have chosen instead to follow the example of the apostle Paul. Although subjected to indignities and insulting accusations, Paul was so conscious of living in the presence of God that His verdict was all that really mattered to him. I am sure the accusations of fellow humans hurt him, and the approval of his own conscience helped him, but his overriding conviction is found in his words, "He who judges me is the Lord(1Corinthians4:4).
Others' unfair opinions of you may be hurting you deeply and causing you to think more unfavorably about yourself than you should. But if you have placed your trust in Jesus as your Savior and Lord, and you're trying to do what is right, don't despair. God, who provided for your salvation and has accepted you as His child, sees you and approves of you. And that is what matters most.

“…나를 판단하실 이는 주시니라” (고린도전서 4:4)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
1985년 클리브랜드의 공립학교 교육감이었던 프레드릭 할리데이는 0.357 구경권총으로 자신의 가슴을 쏴 자살을 했습니다. 그가 남긴 유서에서 자기는 큰 성공을 거둔 사람이지만 그를 반대하는 사람들이 자기에게 옳치 못하고 악의에 찬 비난을 퍼부어 그의 위엄이 손상받는 것을 참을 수가 없다고 하였습니다. 스스로 목숨을 끊은 그는 자기의 가족과 친지들에게 큰 상처를 남겼습니다. 죽는 길 보다는 바울사도가 보여준 길을 선택했다면 얼마나 좋았을까 하고 나는 생각해 봅니다. 바울사도는 경멸과 비난을 받으며 모욕을 당하면서도 하나님의 임재하심을 깊이 의식하며 살았기 때문에 하나님께서 내리시는 판단만이 자기에게 중요하다고 생각했습니다. 물론 바울사도도 당시 다른 사람들로부터 비난을 받을 때 마음에 고통이 있었을 것입니다. 그리고 양심에 거리낄 것이 없다는 것이 그에게 분명히 도움이 되었을 것입니다. 그러나 “다만 나를 판단하실 이는 주” (고전 4:4)라고 한 그의 글에서 가장 큰 확신을 찾을 수 있습니다. 당신에 대한 다른 사람들의 공평치 못한 생각들 때문에 당신도 깊이 상처 입고 또 이로 인해 자신을 자책 할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 당신이 예수님을 당신의 구속자시요 주님으로 믿으며 행동을 바르게 하려 한다면 낙담하지 마십시오. 당신을 구속해 주시는 하나님이 당신을 자녀로 삼아 주셨고 당신을 지켜보시며 인정해 주십니다. 이것이 무엇보다도 중요합니다.

생각해 봅시다.당신은 하나님을 기쁘게 하는 것이 무엇보다도 가장 중요하다고 진정으로 믿습니까? 그렇게 믿는다면 당신의 가족이나, 직장 동료들, 이웃들, 모르는 사람들과의 관계에 있어서는 어떻게 해야 하나요?

<하나님께서 당신 편이심을 확신한다면 당신에게 대적하는 사람이 누구이든 상관이 없습니다.>
