little by little

"Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land."
(Exodus 23:30)

When I was a little girl, my mother gave me her prized "reader" to help me learn, just as it had helped her years earlier. I loved one particular story, never dreaming how much it would affect me years later.

It was about a little boy with a small shovel. He was trying to clear a pathway through deep, new-fallen snow in front of his house. A man paused to observe the child's enormous task. "Little boy," he inquired, "how can someone as small as you expect to finish a task as big as this?" The boy looked up and replied confidently "Little by little, that's how!" And he continued shoveling.

God awakened the seed of that story at a time when I was recovering from a breakdown. I remember how my "adult" self taunted the weak "child" within me: "How can someone as inadequate as you expect to surmount so great a mountain as this?" That little boy's reply became my reply: "Little by little, that's how!" And I did overcome by depending on God. But it was one small victory after another.

The obstacles facing Israel as they considered claiming the land God had promised them must have seemed insurmountable. But He didn't ask them to do it all at once.

"Little by little" is an effective strategy for victory.

 조금씩 조금씩!

"네가 번성하여 그 땅을 기업으로 얻을 때까지 내가 그들을 네 앞에서 조금씩 쫓아 내리라" (출애굽기 23:30)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
내가 어렸을 적에, 어머니께서는 오래 전 당신께 도움이 되었던 것처럼 배우는데 도움이 되라고 상으로 받았던 교재를 나에게 건네주셨다.
나는 특히 한 이야기를 정말 좋아했는데 그 이야기가 훗날 내게 얼마나 큰 영향을 끼칠지는 미처 몰랐다.

그것은 작은 삽을 가진 어린 소년의 얘기였다. 그 아이는 집 앞에 새로 높이 쌓인 눈을 치워 길을 내려 하였다.
지나가던 어른이 멈춰서서 그 소년의 만만찮은 일거리를 살펴보고는 물었다. "얘야, 너 같이 작은아이가 이 큰일을 어떻게 끝낼 수 있겠니?" 아이는 고개를 들고 자신 있게 대답했다.
"조금씩 조금씩, 그렇게 해요!"
그리고는 삽질을 계속했다.

내가 좌절된 상태에서 회복될 때 하나님께서 이 이야기의 핵심을 내게 일깨워 주셨다.
"너같이 부족한 사람이 어떻게 이런 거대한 산을 넘을 수 있니?" 라고 나 자신 "어른"이 내 속의 약한 "아이"를 얼마나 조롱했던가 기억난다.
하지만 이제 책 속의 아이의 대답이 나의 대답이 되었다. "조금씩 조금씩, 그렇게 하지요!" 그리고, 하나님을 의지함으로써 나는 극복했다.
하지만 그 작은 승리는 그 후로도 계속 이어졌다.

하나님께서 약속하신 땅을 차지하려 했던 이스라엘 앞에 놓인 장애물은 아마도 극복할 수 없을 것 같이 보였을 것이다. 그러나 하나님께서는 단번에 모든 것을 하라고 요구하지 않으셨다.

"조금씩 조금씩"이 승리의 전략이다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
주님은 매년 매년 나를 인도하시지 않는다. 매일 매일도 아니다.
주님은 한 걸음 한 걸음 내 길을 여시고
나의 길을 인도하신다.
