 Money Matters

"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other."
(Luke 16:13)

Godfrey Davis, who wrote a biography of the Duke of Wellington, said, "I found an old account ledger that showed how the Duke spent his money. It was a far better clue to what he thought was really important than the reading of his letters or speeches."

How we handle money reveals much about our priorities.
That's why Jesus often talked about money. One-sixth of the Gospels' content, including one out of every three parables, touches on stewardship.
Jesus wasn't a fundraiser. He dealt with money matters because money matters. For some of us, though, it matters too much.

Jesus warned that we can become slaves to money. We may not think that money means more to us than God does. But Jesus did not say we must serve God more than we serve money.
The issue isn't what occupies first place in our life, but whether we serve money at all.
Pastor and author George Buttrick said, "Of all the masters the soul can choose, there are at last only two-God and money. All choices, however small, however the alternatives may be disguised, are but variants of this choice."

 돈은 중요하다?

"집 하인이 두 주인을 섬길 수 없나니 혹 이를 미워하고 저를 사랑하거나 혹 이를 중히 여기고 저를 경히 여길 것임이니라" (누가복음 16:13)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
웰링턴 공작의 전기를 썼던 갓프레이 데 이비스는 "나는 공작이 어떻게 돈을 썼는지 보여주는 오래된 장부를 발견했다. 그것은 그의 편지나 연설문을 읽는 것보다도 그가 실제로 무엇을 중요하게 여겼는지 알려 주는 훨씬 좋은 단서가 되었다."라고 말했습니다.

우리가 어떻게 돈을 다루는가는 우리 삶의 우선순위에 대해서 많은 것을 보여줍니다. 그것이 바로 예수님께서 돈에 대해서 자주 말씀하셨던 이유입니다.
모든 비유의 3분의 1을 포함하여 복음서 내용의 6분의 1이 이 돈 관리에 대해 얘기하고 있습니다. 예수님은 기금 조성자는 아니셨습니다. 주님은 돈이 중요하기 때문에 돈에 대하여 다루신 것입니다. 하지만 어떤이들은 돈을 너무 중요하게 여깁니다.

예수님은 우리가 돈의 노예가 될 수 있다고 경고하셨습니다. 우리는 돈이 하나님보다도 더 중요하다고 생각하지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리가 돈을 섬기는 것보다 하나님을 더 섬겨야 한다고 말씀하시지 않으셨습니다.
문제는 우리 삶에서 어떤 것을 제일 중요시하느냐가 아니라, 우리가 돈을 섬기는가 섬기지 않는가에 있습니다.
목사이자 작가인 조지 버트릭은 "영혼이 선택할 수 있는 모든 주인들 중에 결국은 두 개의 주인만이 남는데 그것은 하나님과 돈이다. 모든 선택들은, 그것이 아무리 사소한 것이거나 다른 모습으로 위장되어 있다 하더라도 이 두 가지 선택의 변형된 모습에 불과하다."라고 말하였습니다.
