 Unlikely People

They were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." (Mark 1:16-17)

Not only was the Son of God born in an unlikely location and of unlikely parents, He chose His first followers at an unlikely place. He didn't search the religious schools for the most learned scholars. He didn't look among the ranks of brilliant military leaders. He stayed away from skilled statesmen and famous orators. Rather, Jesus went to the shores of Galilee and called out four common fishermen Peter and Andrew, James and John.

"Bad choice," some might say. "Uneducated. Tough characters. What would they know about starting a worldwide movement? They couldn't work a crowd if they had to."

Now, on behalf of fishermen everywhere, let me say that they have many positive traits. They must be resourceful, courageous, and patient. They must plan carefully and take care of their equipment. Such qualities are no doubt helpful in carrying out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), but I don't think that's why Jesus chose those men. I believe He wanted to demonstrate how God can transform ordinary people into "fishers of men"
(Mark 1:16-17).

God's work is often done by unlikely people from unlikely places?people like you and me. To be successful, we must follow the One who can make us fishers of men.

 예상 밖의 사람들

“저희는 어부라 예수께서 가라사대 나를 따라 오너라 내가 너희로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라 하시니”
(마가복음 1:16-17)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
하나님의 아들은 예상 밖의 장소와 예상 밖의 부모에게서 태어나셨을 뿐 아니라 그의 첫 제자들도 예상 밖의 장소에서 선택되었습니다. 그는 가장 교육을 많이 받은 학자들을 선택하려고 신학교를 찾아 다니지 않았습니다. 훌륭한 군대의 지도자 중에서도 찾지 않았습니다. 그는 유능한 정치가나 유명한 연설가들도 멀리 하셨습니다. 오히려 예수님은 갈릴리 호숫가로 가셔서 베드로, 안드레, 야고보, 요한과 같은 네명의 평범한 어부를 제자로 부르셨습니다.

어떤 사람들은 “잘못 된 선택”이라고 말할지도 모릅니다. “교육도 받지 못하고 거친 성격의 그 사람들이 무엇을 안다고 세계로 펼쳐나갈 운동을 시작할 수 있겠나? 한 무리의 군중을 대상으로 해서도 못할 사람들인데”라고 말할 것입니다.

그러면 내가 모든 어부들을 대신하여 어부들에게 얼마나 좋은 점들이 많은지를 말해보겠습니다. 어부는 자원을 잘 쓸 줄 알고 용기도 많으며, 또 인내심도 많아야 합니다. 그들은 조심하여 계획을 세워야 하며 장비들도 잘 간수해야 합니다. 이러한 점들이 주님의 지상명령(마 28:19-20)을 수행하는데 도움이 되는 것은 당연한 일이지만, 이것 때문에 예수님께서 그들을 선택하셨다고 생각되지는 않습니다. 나는 이것은 하나님께서 보통 사람들을 “사람을 낚는 어부”(막 1:16-17)로 만드시는 방법을 보이시기 위해서였다고 믿습니다.

하나님의 일은 당신과 나와 같은 사람들, 곧 예상 밖의 사람들에 의하여, 그리고 예상 밖의 장소에서 이루어질 때가 많습니다. 성공을 하려면 우리를 사람 낚는 어부로 만드실 수 있는 하나님을 따라야 합니다.

우리는 특별한 스타가 아닐지라도
재능이 별로 없을지라도
하나님께서 그의 권능 안에서
우리를 통해 그분의 뜻을 이루십니다.
