 무성한 나무

♡ 잠언 11:24 - 11:30 

“ 자기의 재물을 의지하는 자는 패망하려니와 의인은 푸른 잎사귀 같아서 번성하리라 “

(잠언 11:28)

나는 수집하는 것을 항상 좋아했다.   어릴 적에 우표를 모았고, 야구 카드와 만화책도 모았다.

이제 부모가 되어보니 내 아이들에게서 똑같은 모습을 본다.

그러다가 가끔은 이런 생각을 한다.

 ‘너, 정말 곰 인형이 또 필요해?’

물론 그것은 ‘필요’해서라기보다 뭔가 새로운 것이 주는 매력 때문 이거나, 아니면 때때로 오래되고 희귀한 것에 끌리는 간절한 마음 때문이다.

마음을 사로잡는 것이 무엇이든, 우리는 “그것”을 갖기만 하면 삶이 더 나아지고 행복해지고 만족하게 될 거라 유혹받는다.

그러나 그런 것들은 결코 그러한 기대를 채워주지 못한다.

왜 일까?

그것은 하나님께서 우리를 그분에 의해 채워지도록 창조하셨고, 우리를 둘러싼 세상이 주장하듯 물질이 우리의 갈망하는 마음을 충족시킬 수 없기 때문이다.

이런 긴장 관계는 전혀 새로운 것이 아니다.

잠언서는 두 가지 종류의 삶, 곧 부를 추구하며 사는 삶과 사랑의 하나님에 기반을 두고 관대히 베푸는 삶을 대조해 보여준다.

유진 피터슨은 ‘메시지 성경’에서 잠언 11장 28절을 이렇게 풀어서 말하고 있다.

“물질에 바친 삶은 나무 그루터기 같이 죽은 삶이고, 하나님이 빚으시는 삶은 무성한 나무와 같다.”

이 얼마나 생생한 묘사인가! 

두 종류의 삶, 곧 무성하고 열매 맺는 삶과 공허하고 메마른 삶. 

세상은 물질적 풍요가 “좋은 삶”이라고 주장한다.

그와 대조적으로 하나님은 우리를 불러 그분 안에 뿌리를 내리고 그분의 선하심을 맛보며, 풍성히 열매 맺게 하신다.

우리가 하나님과 관계를 가지며 빚어져 갈 때, 하나님은 우리의 마음과 소원을 다시 빚어 우리를 완전히 변화시켜 주신다.

물질에 지나치게 집중해 영적으로 힘들었던 때가 있었습니까? 무엇이 당신의 바람을 올바른 관점으로 유지할 수 있게 도와줍니까?

< 하나님 아버지, 하나님께서 주신 좋은 선물에 감사드립니다. 

세상의 물질보다 하나님을 계속 신뢰할 수 있도록 도와주소서.>

24. 흩어 구제하여도 더욱 부하게 되는 일이 있나니 과도히 아껴도 가난하게 될 뿐이니라

25. 구제를 좋아하는 자는 풍족하여질 것이요 남을 윤택하게 하는 자는 자기도 윤택하여지리라

26. 곡식을 내놓지 아니하는 자는 백성에게 저주를 받을 것이나 파는 자는 그의 머리에 복이 임하리라

27. 선을 간절히 구하는 자는 은총을 얻으려니와 악을 더듬어 찾는 자에게는 악이 임하리라

28. 자기의 재물을 의지하는 자는 패망하려니와 의인은 푸른 잎사귀 같아서 번성하리라

29. 자기 집을 해롭게 하는 자의 소득은 바람이라 미련한 자는 마음이 지혜로운 자의 종이 되리라

30. 의인의 열매는 생명 나무라 지혜로운 자는 사람을 얻느니라

 A FLOURISHING TREE

“ Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. “

( PROVERBS 11:28 )

I’ve always had a collector’s heart. 

As a kid, I collected stamps. Baseball cards. Comics. 

Now, as a parent, I see the same impulse in my kids. Sometimes I wonder, Do you really need another teddy bear?

Of course, it’s not about need. It’s about the allure of something new. 

Or sometimes the tantalizing draw of something old, something rare. 

Whatever captivates our imagination, we’re tempted to believe that if we only had “X,” our lives would be better. We’d be happy. Content.

Except those things never deliver the goods. 

Why? 

Because God created us to be filled by Him, not by the things that the world around us often insists will satisfy our longing hearts.

This tension is hardly new. Proverbs contrasts two ways of life: a life spent pursuing riches versus a life grounded in loving God and giving generously. 

In The Message, Eugene Peterson paraphrases Proverbs 11:28 like this: “A life devoted to things is a dead life, a stump; a God- shaped life is a flourishing tree.”

What a picture! Two ways of life: one flourishing and fruitful, one hollow and barren. 

The world insists that material abundance equals “the good life.” 

In contrast, God invites us to be rooted in Him, to experience His goodness, and to flourish fruitfully. 

And as we’re shaped by our relationship with Him, God reshapes our hearts and desires, transforming us from the inside out.

When has an undue focus on material things become a major spiritual struggle for you?

29. He who brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.

30. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.
