  Are You Free?

"Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit . . . , and you are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19)

Who owns you? When I ask myself that question, my first impulse is to dismiss it as nonsensical. With Paul, who enjoyed the rights and freedoms of a Roman citizen, I too can boast that I am free at least politically.

Olav Olavson was a free citizen of Sweden, but he found himself hardpressed for money. So in desperation he sold his body for medical research to the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in 1910. A year later, he inherited a fortune, so he tried to buy himself back. But the Institute refused to sell him his rights to his own body, and in a lawsuit they retained possession of it. The Institute even collected damages from him because he had two teeth extracted without permission.

All of us are slaves to sin and spiritually dead unless we have been born again. We can be set free from the penalty and power of sin (and how I rejoice that I have been set free) by prayerfully asking Jesus Christ to become our Liberator. We experience spiritual freedom as we accept His gift of forgiveness and then offer ourselves as slaves to God (Romans 6:22).What a blessed paradox! As God's slaves we enjoy a life of true freedom, peace, and hope.

“너희 몸은…성령의 전인 줄을 알지 못하느냐 너희는 너희의 것이 아니라” (고린도전서 6:19)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
당신은 누구의 것입니까? 스스로 이런 질문을 해 본 나는 처음에는 쓸데없는 질문 같아서 그냥 넘어가려 했습니다. 사도바울이 로마의 시민으로 권리와 자유를 누렸던 것처럼 나 역시 적어도 정치적으로는 자유롭다고 자랑할 수가 있습니다.

스웨덴의 한 자유 시민이었던 올라브 올라브슨은 돈에 심히 쪼들리게 되었습니다. 그래서 자포자기한 그는 1910년에 스톡홀름에 있는 카롤린스카 연구소에 자기 몸을 의학연구용으로 쓸 수 있게 팔았습니다. 일 년 후에 많은 재산을 상속받게 된 그는 전에 팔았던 자기 몸을 다시 사고자 했습니다. 그러나 그의 몸에 대한 소유권을 되팔기를 거부한 그 연구소는 결국 재판을 통해 소유권을 계속 가지게 되었습니다. 심지어 그 연구소는 허가 없이 이를 두개 뺀 그로부터 손해 배상금까지 받아냈습니다.

우리는 거듭나기 전까지 모두가 죄의 노예이고 영적으로 죽은 사람들입니다. 예수 그리스도께 우리의 해방자가 되어주실 것을 간구함으로 우리는 징벌과 죄의 권세로부터 자유로와질 수가 있습니다(나는 자유하게 되어 얼마나 기쁜지 모릅니다). 우리는 주님의 용서의 선물을 받아들이고 우리 자신을 하나님께 종으로 드릴 때 영적으로 자유로와집니다(롬 6:22). 얼마나 역설적이고도 복된 말씀인지요! 우리는 하나님의 종이 될 때에 참 자유, 참 평화, 참 소망의 삶을 누리게 됩니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
우리는 죄에 묶이고악한 권세 아래 있었습니다. 그러나 구주께서 우리를 자유케 하셔서 남은 일생을 주님 섬기게 하셨습니다.
