 What Kind Of Soil Are You?

"Those who [hear] the Word with a noble and good heart keep it and bear fruit." (Luke 8:15)

A new resident at the drug rehabilitation center where I worked was given the task of planting runner-bean seeds. With no experience growing vegetables, Jim quickly became bored waiting for the seeds to sprout.After weeks of seeing nothing happen, Jim finally noticed signs of life coming up. Before long, he had to put poles in the ground for the beans to climb. One day Jim ran excitedly into the kitchen with some freshly picked beans for dinner. "Wow! All this from tiny seeds!" he exclaimed. "I've sure learned a lot!"As I talked with Jim, it became clear that he learned more than how plants grow. He gained a new insight: If we willingly listen to God in His Word and do what's right for the right reasons and for the right length of time, our lives will be fruitful.In Luke 8, Jesus used a parable to teach that the seed of the Word of God will produce a harvest in good soil. But the seed is productive only if the soil is receptive.People with receptive hearts hear God's Word, obey it, and bear fruit. Others, however, have resistant hearts that fall prey to the devil, do not allow the seed to take root, or are overgrown with the cares and temptations of life.God's Word is good seed. Is your heart good soil?

 당신은 어떤 토양인가요?

“…착하고 좋은 마음으로 말씀을 듣고 지키어 인내로 결실하는 자니라” (누가복음 8:15)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
내가 일하던 약물중독자 재활원에 새로 들어온 한 사람에게 콩을 심는 일이 주어졌습니다. 채소를 키워 본 경험이 없는 짐이라는 이 사람은 씨앗에서 싹이 나오는 것을 기다리다 금방 지겨워지고 말았습니다. 아무런 변화도 나타나지 않은 채 몇 주일이 지난 어느 날 짐은 마침내 생명이 자라나는 모습을 감지할 수 있었습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 짐은 콩줄기가 타고 올라갈 수 있도록 막대기들을 꽂아 주어야 했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 짐은 저녁 반찬용으로 싱싱한 콩을 따들고 부엌으로 기뻐하며 달려 왔습니다. 그리고는 이렇게 소리쳤습니다. “와! 이게 모두 그 조그만 씨앗에서 생겼다구요! 정말 굉장한 것을 배우는군요!” 짐과 대화하는 중에 나는 그가 식물이 어떻게 자라는가 하는 것뿐 아니라 더 많은 것을 배우는 것을 알았습니다. 그는 새로운 것을 깨달았습니다. 곧 우리가 하나님 말씀을 기꺼이 경청하고 올바른 동기에서 적절한 기간 동안 합당한 일을 하면 우리의 삶은 풍성한 열매를 맺는다는 것입니다. 예수님은 누가복음 8장에서 하나님의 말씀인 씨앗이 좋은 흙에서 큰 수확을 거둔다는 교훈을 가르치시기 위해 비유로 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 씨앗은 흙이 잘 받아들일 때에만 많은 열매를 맺습니다. 사람도 받아들이는 자세를 가져야 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 이에 순종하고 열매를 맺습니다. 그러나 어떤 사람들은 거부하는 심령 때문에 사탄의 밥이 되거나 씨앗이 뿌리를 내리지 못하게 되거나 인생의 걱정거리와 유혹으로 덮히고 맙니다. 하나님의 말씀은 좋은 씨앗입니다. 당신의 심령은 좋은 흙입니까?

● 오늘의 기도 ●
주님, 당신께서 약속하신 열매를 맺을 수 있도록 말씀의 씨앗을 심으실 만한 흙이 되기 원합니다. 당신께서 심으신 것들이 뿌리를 내리도록 주님께 나를 언제나 열어놓기를 원합니다.
