 Hearing And Doing

"Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."
(James 1:22)

I read about a man in New York City who died at the age of 63 without ever having had a job. He spent his entire adult life in college. He had acquired so many academic degrees that they looked like the alphabet behind his name.

Why did this man spend his entire life in college? When he was a child, a wealthy relative died who had named him as a beneficiary in his will. It stated that he was to be given enough money to support him every year as long as he stayed in school. And it was to be discontinued when he had completed his education.

The man met the terms of the will, but by staying in school indefinitely he turned a technicality into a steady income for life-something his benefactor never intended. Unfortunately, he spent thousands of hours listening to professors and reading books but never "doing." He acquired more and more knowledge but didn't put it into practice.

This reminds me of what James said: "Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only" (1:22).
If we read the Bible or listen as it is taught but fail to put to work what we have learned, we are as bad as that man with his string of degrees. His education was of no practical benefit to anyone.

Hearing must be matched by doing.

 듣기와 실천하기

"너희는 도를 행하는 자가 되고 듣기만 하여 자신을 속이는 자가 되지말라"
(야고보서 1:22)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
일생동안 직업 없이 살다가 63세의 나이로 사망한 뉴욕시의 어떤 남자에 관한 기사를 읽은 적이 있습니다. 그는 성년시기의 전부를 대학에서 보냈습니다. 수많은 학위를 취득하였기에 그의 이름 뒤에는 받은 학위명이 수식어처럼 항상 따라 다녔습니다.

이 사람이 왜 일생을 대학에서 보냈는지 아십니까? 그가 어렸을 때 유산 수혜자로 그를 지명하였던 한 부자 친척이 죽었습니다. 유언장에는 그가 학교에 다니고 있는 한 매년 충분한 액수의 보조금을 주라고 명시되어 있었습니다. 그리고 그가 학업을 마칠 때보조금이 끊기도록 되어 있었습니다.

이 사람의 경우 유언장에 명시되어 있는 조건을 충족시키기는 하였지만, 학교에 무한정 머물러 있음으로써 전문 교육의 기간을 평생 고정수입의 기회로 바꿔버리고 말았습니다. 이것은 그 유언자도 전혀 의도하지 않았던 것이었습니다.
강의를 듣고 교재를 읽는 데에 아주 많은 시간을 보냈지만 불행히도 그는 배운 것을 "실천"해 보지는 못하였습니다. 그는 아주 많은 지식을 습득하였지만 그 지식을 실생활에 적용하지 못했던 것입니다.

이 이야기는 야고보서 말씀을 기억나게 합니다. "너희는 도를 행하는 자가 되고 듣기만 하는 자가 되지 말라" (1:22).
만일 우리가 성경을 읽거나 들어서 배우고, 배운 것을 생활 속에서 실천하지 않는다면, 학위만 많이 가지고 있는 그 사람만큼 나쁜 사람이 되는 것입니다.
그가 받은 교육은 아무에게도 실질적인 도움을 주지 못했습니다.

들음은 행함과 반드시 연결되어야 합니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
하나님 말씀 읽기를 기뻐하고
"그래, 사실이야"라고 말하더라도
듣고 실천하지 않는다면
거의 소용이 없습니다.
