 What's The Point?

"Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man's all."
(Ecclesiastes 12:13)


What's the point?
This question came to mind as I watched my grandsons' dog fetch a ball for me again and again.

What's the point?
That's what the writer of Ecclesiastes asked as he thought about the monotonous cycle he observed in nature and in life, the same things happening year after year, generation after generation.

What's the point?
That's what a retired businessman was asking, in effect, when he told me he would just as soon die as live any longer. He had seen and done everything he had wanted to do. Now he had reached the place where life held more pain for him than pleasure.

What's the point? Here it is.
A few years before a friend of mine died, he said,
"Life is a wonderful experience. It's marvelous to see that God keeps nature going in its pattern. It's wonderful to know that we're here to love God above everything and to love our neighbor as ourselves. It's comforting to believe that all our sins are forgiven because of what Christ did on the cross. And it's exciting to think about the eternity God has for us. It sure is great to be alive."

Life can be depressing when God is left out. But how exciting it is when He is at the center!

 무슨 의미일까?

"일의 결국을 다 들었으니 하나님을 경외하고 그 명령을 지킬지어다 이것이 사람의 본분이니라"
(전도서 12:13)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
무슨 의미일까? 손자들의 개가 내가 던진 공을 계속 물어오는 것을 보는 동안 이런 질문이 생겼습니다.

무슨 의미일까? 그것은 전도서의 저자가 자연과 인생 속에서 관찰한 단조로운 주기를 생각하며 질문한 것입니다. 즉 똑같은 일들이 해마다 세대마다 일어나고 있다는 것입니다.

무슨 의미일까? 이는 실은 한 은퇴한 직장인이 더 사는 것보다 죽었으면 한다며 내게 물어본 질문입니다. 그가 원했던 모든 것을 보았고 하고 싶은 모든 것을 다 해보았습니다. 이제 그는 삶에서 즐거움보다 고통이 많은 곳에 도달해 있었습니다.

의미하는 바는 무엇일까요? 바로 이것입니다. 나의 한 친구는 죽기 몇 년 전에 이렇게 말했었습니다.
"삶이란 놀라운 경험이야. 하나님께서 자연이 주어진 패턴대로 가도록 주관하시는 것을 본다는 것은 참으로 놀라워. 우리가 삶의 현장에서 무엇보다도 하나님을 사랑하고 우리 이웃을 우리 몸처럼 사랑하기 위해 여기에 있다는 것을 아는 것은 놀라운 일일세. 그리스도께서 십자가상에서 하신 일로 인해 우리의 모든 죄가 용서 받았음을 믿는 것은 큰 위로를 주네. 또한 하나님께서 우리를 위해 준비하신 영생을 생각하면 정말 가슴이 설렌다네. 살아있다는 것은 실로 굉장한 일이야."

하나님이 빠진 삶은 우울합니다. 그러나 그분이 중심에 계실 때는 정말 가슴뛰는 삶이 됩니다.

가치 있는 인생은 하나님과 연결되어 있고
그의 꺼지지 않는 사랑에 소망을 두며
예수님 밟던 곳을 기쁨으로 걸어갑니다
가치 있는 인생은 위로부터 옵니다.
