 Will We Pass The Test?

"When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, . . . she took of its fruit and ate." (Genesis 3:6)

Coyotes can't resist a tasty sheep dinner. That's why a number of years ago researchers experimented with about 500 different chemicals to develop a solution to spray on sheep that would make them "coyote proof." A compound that tasted like spicy hot sauce offered the most promise.

Scientists theorized that if the tests were successful, coyotes might lose their taste for sheep. If that were to happen, the temptation that makes coyotes a public nuisance in sheep country would be gone, and man would become the wild dog's best friend.

Sometimes I wonder why God didn't do something like that in the Garden of Eden. Why didn't He make the tree of the knowledge of good and evil bear ugly fruit?
Why didn't He surround it with a chain-link fence with barbed wire at the top?
Why did God even create the tree in the first place?
Part of the answer, I believe, is that temptation to do evil brought Adam and Eve face to face with the ultimate moral question: Would they show confidence in their Creator and lovingly obey Him with all their heart?

We face a similar test every day. What are we going to do?
Will we flunk the test?
Or will we trust God completely and obey His commands?

 우리는 시험을 통과할 수 있을까?

“여자가 그 나무를 본즉 먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고…여자가 그 실과를 따먹고” (창세기 3:6)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
코요테는 먹음직한 양을 보고는 그냥 놔두지를 못합니다. 그래서 오래 전 연구가들은 양에게 어떤 물약을 뿌려서 코요테를 멀리 쫓을 수 있는 방법을 찾으려고 약 5백 가지의 화학물질을 가지고 실험하였습니다. 그 결과 톡 쏘는 매운 맛이 나는 어떤 합성물질이 가장 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났습니다.

이 실험이 성공하면 코요테들은 양에 대한 입맛을 잃어버릴 것이라고 연구진들은 생각했습니다. 그렇게 된다면 양을 치는 고장에서 코요테가 입맛을 자극받아 사람들에게 성가신 존재가 되는 일은 사라질 것이고 인간이 이 야생의 개와 좋은 친구가 될 수 있을 것입니다.

나는 때때로 하나님께서 에덴동산에서 왜 이렇게 하지 않으셨을까 생각해 봅니다. 왜 선악과를 보기 흉하게 만들지 않으셨을까? 왜 처음부터 그 나무를 만드셨을까? 이에 대한 부분적인 답변으로는 악을 행하려는 유혹이 아담과 하와로 하여금 가장 궁극적인 도덕적 질문을 하게 만들었다는 것입니다. 곧 자기의 창조주를 신뢰하며 온 마음을 다해 사랑으로 순종할 것인가 하는 질문입니다.

우리는 매일 비슷한 시험을 만납니다. 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 시험에 지고 말 것인가요? 아니면 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰하고 그의 명령을 따를 것인가요?

인생의 길에는 장애물들이 있어
우리의 선택을 시험합니다.
오 주님, 주님의 길을 알게 하셔서
최선의 선택을 할 수 있도록 도우소서.
