 How Much Are You Worth?

 

"When we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son." (Romans 5:10)

A bored student at the University of Washington used an Internet auction site to sell his soul to the highest bidder. As it turned out, the top offer was only $400.

Since the soul is immaterial, it can't be extracted from a body like a physical organ such as a heart. The student had to admit, "I don't think the high bidder is going to be able to collect on my soul."

That lighthearted offer calls to mind our Savior's serious question in Matthew 16:26, "What will a man give in exchange for his soul?" As He challenged His listeners to think about a future day of judgment, Jesus said that the whole world fades in comparison to the value of a soul.

The question of our worth, therefore, isn't a matter of how much we own. The author of Psalm 49 pointed to the
foolishness of those who value possessions more than their souls. Instead, the psalmist looked to the Lord, confident that He "will redeem my soul from the power of the grave" (v.15).

It is because God values us so much that He sent Jesus to earth as a baby. He grew up and then died on the cross to pay the price to redeem us (Romans 5:6-21).

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
학업에 싫증이 난 워싱턴 대학의 한 학생이 인터넷 경매를 통해 자기의 영혼을 최고 입찰자에게 팔려고 내어 놓았습니다. 그 결과 최고로 부른 값은 겨우 400불이었습니다.

영혼은 무형의 것이므로 심장과 같은 신체의 기관처럼 몸에서 뽑아낼 수가 없습니다. 그 학생은 "최고 입찰자도 내 영혼을 가져갈 수 있다고 생각지는 않아요" 하며 인정해야 했습니다.

그같은 경솔한 제안은 "사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨을 바꾸겠느냐"고 하신 마태복음 16:26의 주님의 심각한 질문을 생각하게 합니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 장래의 심판 날에 대해 생각하라고 도전하시면서 한 영혼이 온 천하보다 귀하다고 말씀하셨습니다.

그러므로 우리의 가치에 대한 질문은 우리가 얼마나 소유하고 있는가와는 상관이 없는 것입니다. 시편 49편의 기자는 영혼보다 자기 소유에 더 가치를 두는 사람들의 어리석음을 지적하고 있습니다. 시편기자는 그와는 반대로 "내 영혼을 음부의 권세에서 구속하시리라"(15절)는 확신을 갖고 주님을 바라보았습니다.

하나님은 우리를 너무나 소중히 보시기 때문에 예수님을 이 세상에 한 아기로 보내셨습니다. 그가 장성하여 우리를 죄에서 사면하시기 위한 대가를 치르시기 위해 십자가에 돌아가셨습니다 (롬 5:6-21).
