 Who Owns Your Home?

 

"All that is in heaven and in earth is Yours." (1 Chronicles 29:11)

My wife and I bought our first home when we moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
During my years in the pastorate, a parsonage had always been provided. I remember the feeling when I signed a 30-year mortgage. It seemed that I was committing myself to a lifetime of debt.

Another thought has gripped me recently I'll never own my home, even when the mortgage is paid off. You see, God is the real title holder. Everything belongs to Him.

These musings raise a vital issue in our highly materialistic culture. We as Christians must recognize that God is the rightful owner of our possessions, or they will be a cause of frustration. Our attitude will be reflected in what happens to them. A dent in the fender of our new car, for instance, can bend us out of shape. A coffee spill on the furniture can stain our attitude. A theft can easily rob us of peace.

We need to give up ownership rights and take our stewardship responsibilities seriously. This does not mean adopting a casual, wasteful attitude about material things. In our hearts we must make a transfer of our goods to God, and then keep reminding ourselves who really owns them
(1 Chronicles 29:11).
This will help us use things wisely, hold them lightly, and enjoy them fully.

 당신의 집은 누구의 것입니까?

“천지에 있는 것이 주의 것이로소이다” (역대상 29:11)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
나와 아내는 미시간의 그랜드 래피드로 이사하여 처음으로 집을 사게 되었습니다. 그전까지 목회를 하는 동안에는 언제나 사택이 제공되었기 때문입니다. 나는 30년 기한의 주택 융자 계약서에 서명을 할 때의 느낌을 지금도 기억하고 있습니다. 그것은 마치 나의 한 평생을 빚 갚는 일에 저당 잡히는 느낌이었습니다.

최근에는 또 다른 생각이 나의 마음을 지배하고 있습니다. 집 값을 다 지불한다 해도 나는 내 집을 소유하지 못한다는 생각입니다. 사실은 하나님께서 진짜 소유자이십니다. 모든 것이 하나님의 것입니다.

이와 같은 생각은 너무나 팽배해 있는 우리 시대의 물질 문명에 대하여 중대한 문제를 던집니다. 그리스도인으로서 우리는 하나님께서 마땅히 우리의 모든 소유의 주인이시라는 것을 인정해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 그 소유물들은 우리에게 좌절의 원인이 될 것입니다. 우리의 태도는 우리의 소유물들이 어떻게 되는가에 따라 달라질 것입니다. 예를 들어 새 자동차의 겉표면에 긁힌 자국이 우리의 마음을 틀어 놓을 수 있습니다. 집안의 물건 위에 쏟아진 커피는 우리의 태도마저 얼룩지게 할 수 있습니다. 도둑을 맞으면 우리 마음의 평화도 쉽게 도둑맞게 됩니다.

우리는 소유권을 내려놓고 진지하게 청지기의 책임을 져야 합니다. 이것은 물질을 아무 계획없이 낭비하는 태도를 가지라는 뜻은 아닙니다. 우리는 마음 속에서 우리의 모든 물질을 하나님께 옮겨 드리고 그것의 진정한 주인이 누구인가를 계속 상기해야 합니다(대상 29:11). 이렇게 하는 것이 우리로 하여금 물질을 현명하게 사용하고, 느슨히 붙잡으며, 또한 충분히 즐길 수 있게 도와줄 것입니다.

하나님은 그의 주권의 은혜 안에서
뜻하신 대로 우리에게 주십니다.
