💙 빈민가의 음악 소리

"노래하며 시온에 이르러 그들의 머리 위에 영영한 희락을 띠고" [이사야 35:10]

카테우라는 남미 파라과이의 작은 빈민가 이름입니다. 몹시 가난한 그 지역의 사람들은 쓰레기장에서 나오는 물건을 재활용하며 살아가고 있습니다. 그런데 이런 가망 없는 상황에서 아름다운 일이 일어났습니다.

오케스트라가 생긴 것입니다. 바이올린 하나의 가격이 카테우라 마을의 집 한 채 값이라 그 오케스트라는 쓰레기 더미에서 주운 것들로 자신들의 악기들을 창의적으로 만들어야 했습니다. 바이올린은 기름통에 줄걸이로 구부러진 포크를 사용해서, 색소폰은 수도 파이프에 키로 유리병 뚜껑을 사용해서, 그리고 첼로는 양철 드럼통에 조율 핀으로 뇨키 파스타 롤러를 달아매어 만들었습니다. 이런 장치들로 연주되는 모차르트의 음악을 듣는 것은 아주 멋진 일입니다. 그 오케스트라는 많은 나라에 순회공연을 하며 젊은 연주자들의 시야를 넓혀 주었습니다.

매립 쓰레기에서 만들어진 바이올린. 빈민가에서 나온 음악. 그것은 하나님이 하시는 일을 상징적으로 보여줍니다. 가난에서 아름다움이 피어난 이 장면처럼, 이사야 선지자는 메마른 땅에 꽃이 피고(이사야 35:1-2), 사막에 시냇물이 흐르며(6-7절), 칼과 창이 농기구로 만들어지고(2:4), 빈곤한 자들이 기쁨의 노랫소리에 하나가 되는(35:5-6, 10) 하나님의 새로운 창조의 세계를 마음에 그리고 있습니다.

카테우라 오케스트라의 감독은 말합니다. “온갖 쓰레기가 우리에게 버려집니다. 그러면 우리는 음악으로 되돌려줍니다.” 그들은 연주를 통해, 언젠가 하나님께서 모든 사람의 눈물을 닦아주시고 더 이상 가난이 없게 될 미래의 한 장면을 세상에 보여주고 있습니다.

하나님이 당신 삶의 “쓰레기”를 아름다운 것으로 바꾸시는 것을 본 적이 있습니까? 하나님은 어떻게 당신이 고통으로부터 “음악”을 만들어내기를 바라십니까?

<성령님, 제 인생의 가난을 아름다운 것으로 바꾸어 주소서.>

1. 광야와 메마른 땅이 기뻐하며 사막이 백합화 같이 피어 즐거워하며 2. 무성하게 피어 기쁜 노래로 즐거워하며 레바논의 영광과 갈멜과 사론의 아름다움을 얻을 것이라 그것들이 여호와의 영광 곧 우리 하나님의 아름다움을 보리로다 3. 너희는 약한 손을 강하게 하며 떨리는 무릎을 굳게 하며 4. 겁내는 자들에게 이르기를 굳세어라, 두려워하지 말라, 보라 너희 하나님이 오사 보복하시며 갚아 주실 것이라 하나님이 오사 너희를 구하시리라 하라 5. 그 때에 맹인의 눈이 밝을 것이며 못 듣는 사람의 귀가 열릴 것이며 6. 그 때에 저는 자는 사슴 같이 뛸 것이며 말 못하는 자의 혀는 노래하리니 이는 광야에서 물이 솟겠고 사막에서 시내가 흐를 것임이라 7. 뜨거운 사막이 변하여 못이 될 것이며 메마른 땅이 변하여 원천이 될 것이며 승냥이의 눕던 곳에 풀과 갈대와 부들이 날 것이며 8. 거기에 대로가 있어 그 길을 거룩한 길이라 일컫는 바 되리니 깨끗하지 못한 자는 지나가지 못하겠고 오직 구속함을 입은 자들을 위하여 있게 될 것이라 우매한 행인은 그 길로 다니지 못할 것이며 9. 거기에는 사자가 없고 사나운 짐승이 그리로 올라가지 아니하므로 그것을 만나지 못하겠고 오직 구속함을 받은 자만 그리로 행할 것이며 10. 여호와의 속량함을 받은 자들이 돌아오되 노래하며 시온에 이르러 그들의 머리 위에 영영한 희락을 띠고 기쁨과 즐거움을 얻으리니 슬픔과 탄식이 사라지리로다

✝  Isaiah 35:1-10

"They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads."[ ISAIAH 35:10 ]

Cateura is a small slum in Paraguay, South America. Desperately poor, its villagers survive by recycling items from its rubbish dump. But from these unpromising conditions something beautiful has emerged—an orchestra.

With a violin costing more than a house in Cateura, the orchestra had to get creative, crafting its own instruments from their garbage supply. Violins are made from oil cans with bent forks as tailpieces. Saxophones have come from drainpipes with bottle tops for keys. Cellos are made from tin drums with gnocchi rollers for tuning pegs. Hearing Mozart played on these contraptions is a beautiful thing. The orchestra has gone on tour in many countries, lifting the sights of its young members.

Violins from landfills. Music from slums. That’s symbolic of what God does. For when the prophet Isaiah envisions God’s new creation, a similar picture of beauty-from-poverty emerges, with barren lands bursting into blooming flowers (ISAIAH 35:1–2), deserts flowing with streams (VV. 6–7), castaway war tools crafted into garden instruments (2:4), and impoverished people becoming whole to the sounds of joyful songs (35:5–6, 10).

“The world sends us garbage,” Cateura’s orchestra director says. “We send back music.” And as they do, they give the world a glimpse of the future, when God will wipe away the tears of every eye and poverty will be no more.  -SHERIDAN VOYSEY-

Holy Spirit, turn the poverty in my life into something beautiful.

1. The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, 2. it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3. Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4. say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you." 5. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7. The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. 8. And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it. 9. No lion will be there, nor will any ferocious beast get up on it; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, 10. and the ransomed of the LORD will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
