정황에서 벗어나(Out of Context)

 정황에서 벗어나 

♣ 말씀 묵상 : 요한복음 20:13-20:16

" [마리아는] 뒤로 돌이켜 예수께서 서 계신 것을 보았으나 예수이신 줄은 알지 못하더라 "(요한복음 20:14)

비행기를 타려고 줄을 서 있는데 누가 내 어깨를 두드렸습니다. 돌아보니 어떤 사람이 다정하게 인사를 했습니다. “엘리사! 나 기억해? 나 조앤이야!” 속으로 내가 알았던 여러 명의 ‘조앤’들을 훑어보았지만 그녀가 누구인지 생각나지 않았습니다. 전에 이웃에 살던 사람이었나? 옛 직장동료? 이것 참… 도무지 생각이 나지 않았습니다.

내가 애쓰는 걸 알아차린 조앤이 말했습니다. “엘리사, 우리 고등학교 때 서로 알았잖아.” 풋볼 경기가 열리던 금요일 밤 관중석에서 응원을 하던 기억이 떠올랐습니다. 그때의 정황이 살아나자 ‘조앤'을 알아볼 수 있었습니다.

예수님이 돌아가신 후 이른 아침에 무덤에 간 막달라 마리아는 돌이 치워져 있고 주님의 몸도 사라진 것을 알게 되었습니다(요 20:1-2). 

그녀는 달려가서 베드로와 요한을 데리고 왔는데, 그들도 무덤이 비어있는 것을 보았습니다(3-10절). 

그러나 마리아는 슬픔에 싸여 무덤 밖에서 서성거리고 있는데(11절), 

그때 예수님이 거기에 나타나셨어도 “마리아는 그분이 예수님인 것을 몰랐습니다”(14절, 현대인의 성경). 그가 동산지기인 줄 생각했기 때문입니다(15절).

그녀는 어떻게 예수님을 알아보지 못했을까요? 부활하신 주님의 몸이 너무 변하여 주님을 알아보기 어려웠던 것일까요? 너무 슬픈 나머지 그분의 정체가 가려졌던 것일까요? 

아니면 어쩌면 제 경우처럼, 예수님이 무덤에서 죽은 상태로 있지 않고 “정황을 벗어나” 동산에서 살아계셨기에 주님을 알아보지 못했던 것일까요?

우리가 기도할 때나 성경을 읽을 때, 아니면 단순히 우리 마음속에 작은 소리로 속삭이며 예수님이 우리를 찾아오실 때, 우리 역시 주님을 모르고 놓쳐버릴 수 있지는 않을까요?

사랑하는 하나님, 친숙한 상황에서나 또는 우리를 놀라게 하는 뜻밖의 상황에서나 예수님이 찾아오실 때, 주님을 볼 수 있는 눈을 우리에게 허락해 주소서.

 Out of Context

♣ Read : John 20:13-20:16 

"She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus."(John 20:14)

As I queued up to board my flight, someone tapped my shoulder. I turned and received a warm greeting. “Elisa! Do you remember me? It’s Joan!” 

My mind flipped through various “Joans” I’d known, but I couldn’t place her. Was she a previous neighbor? 

A past coworker? 

Oh dear . . . I didn’t know.

Sensing my struggle,Joan responded, “Elisa, we knew each other in high school.” A memory rose: Friday night football games, cheering from the stands. Once the context was clarified, I recognized Joan.

After Jesus’s death, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early in the morning and found the stone rolled away and His

body gone (JOHN 20:1–2). She ran to get Peter and John, who returned with her to find the tomb empty (VV . 3–10). 

But Mary lingered outside in her grief (V . 11). 

When Jesus appeared there, “she did not realize that it was Jesus” (V . 14), thinking He was the gardener (V . 15).

How could she have not recognized Jesus? Was His resurrected body so changed that it was difficult to recognize Him? Did her grief blind her to His identity? Or, perhaps, like me, was it because Jesus was “out of context,” alive in the garden instead of dead in the tomb, that she didn’t recognize Him?

How might we too miss Jesus when He comes into our days—during prayer or Bible reading, or by simply whispering in our hearts? 

Dear God, give us eyes to see Jesus, however He comes—in a familiar context or surprising us in an unexpected one.
