“ 다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워 하나니 이는 환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다 “[로마서 5:3-4]

오토바이를 타고 가던 댄은 갑자기 방향을 틀어 끼어드는 차를 피하려다 마주 오는 차와 충돌했습니다. 2주 후 외상 치료 센터에서 깨어났을 때 그의 몸은 “만신창이”였습니다. 무엇보다 심각한 것은 척수 손상으로 몸이 마비된 것이었습니다. 댄은 회복을 위해 기도했지만 전혀 나아지지 않았습니다.

대신 그는 하나님이 친근하게 이렇게 가르쳐 주셨다고 믿습니다. “이 땅에서의 삶의 목적은 우리가 그리스도의 형상과 똑같아지는 것이다. 불행하게도, 그런 일은 매사가 잘 풀리고 별 문제가 없을 때에는 일어나지 않는다. 그것은... 삶이 고달플 때 일어난다. 하루를 버텨내기 위해 기도로 하나님을 의지해야만 할 때 일어난다.”

바울 사도는 하나님과 함께 올바로 섰을 때의 두 가지 유익, 곧 환난 중에 인내하고 즐거워하는 것에 대해 설명했습니다(로마서 5:3-4). 이 두 가지 유익은 극기적 의연함으로 환난을 견뎌내라는 것이거나, 고통 중에 즐거운 오락거리를 찾으라는 것이 아니었습니다.

그것은 하나님을 흔들림 없이 신뢰하라는 권면이었습니다. 환난 중에 그리스도와 함께 할 때 그것은 “인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을” 일구어 냅니다(3-4절). 이것은 모두 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 버리시지 않고 불 가운데를 지나 영원에 이르도록 우리와 동행하신다는 믿음에서 나옵니다.

하나님은 우리를 고난 중에 만나 주시며 하나님 안에서 성장하도록 도와주십니다.

환난이 닥칠 때 하나님이 우리를 싫어하신다고 생각하기보다 하나님의 사랑이 “우리 마음에 부은 바”(5절) 된 것을 경험하는 가운데 하나님이 그 환난을 사용하여 어떻게 우리의 인격을 단련하고 세워 나가시는지를 기대할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

예수님의 능력 안에서 고난에 잘 대처하려면 당신의 어떤 마음과 생각을 바꾸어야 할까요? 이번 주에 어려움을 인내하고 즐거워할 수 있는 구체적인 방법으로 어떤 것이 있을까요?

<예수님, 인내하며 살아가는 데 필요한 것들을 주시는 주님 안에서 소망과 기쁨을 찾게 하소서.>

1. 그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자 2. 또한 그로 말미암아 우리가 믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며 하나님의 영광을 바라고 즐거워하느니라 3. 다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를, 4. 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다 5. 소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 하지 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이니 6. 우리가 아직 연약할 때에 기약대로 그리스도께서 경건하지 않은 자를 위하여 죽으셨도다 7. 의인을 위하여 죽는 자가 쉽지 않고 선인을 위하여 용감히 죽는 자가 혹 있거니와 8. 우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라 9. 그러면 이제 우리가 그의 피로 말미암아 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 더욱 그로 말미암아 진노하심에서 구원을 받을 것이니 10. 곧 우리가 원수 되었을 때에 그의 아들의 죽으심으로 말미암아 하나님과 화목하게 되었은즉 화목하게 된 자로서는 더욱 그의 살아나심으로 말미암아 구원을 받을 것이니라 11. 그뿐 아니라 이제 우리로 화목하게 하신 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님 안에서 또한 즐거워하느니라

 

💙 NOT FOR OUR COMFORT

"Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."[Rome 5:3-4]

Dan was riding his motorcycle when a car swerved into his lane and pushed him into oncoming traffic. When he woke up two weeks later in the trauma center, he was “a mess.” Worst of all, he suffered a spinal cord injury that left him a paraplegic. Dan prayed for healing, but it never came.

Instead, he believes God has compassionately taught him that “the purpose of this life is that we become conformed to the image of Christ. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen when everything is unicorns and rainbows. It . . . happens when life is tough. When we’re forced to rely upon God through prayer just to make it through the day.”

The apostle Paul explained two benefits of right standing with God: persevering and rejoicing in suffering (ROMANS 5:3–4). These two benefits weren’t a call to endure suffering with stoic fortitude or to find pleasure in pain. It was an invitation to unshakable confidence in God. Suffering plus Christ cultivates “perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (VV. 3–4). This all flows from a faith that the Father won’t abandon us but will walk with us through the fire and into the future.

God meets us in our suffering and helps us grow in Him. Rather than viewing afflictions as His disfavor, may we look for ways He’s using them to sharpen and build our character as we experience His love “poured out into our hearts” (V. 5). -MARVIN WILLIAM

What needs to change in your heart and mind for you to handle suffering in Jesus’ strength? What’s one practical way you can persevere through and rejoice in challenges this week?

<Jesus, may I find hope and joy in You as You provide what I need to persevere in this life.>

1. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2. through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of    the glory of God. 3. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4. perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he   has given us. 6. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10. For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11. Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received    reconciliation.
