In the years following the American Civil War (1861–1865), Union Major General Lew Wallace served as a governor of the New Mexico territories; New Mexico not yet having been admitted as a state. His work there put him in contact with many of the characters that make up the Wild West’s near-mythic history, including Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett. It was here that Wallace wrote what has been called by some “the most influential Christian book” of the 19th century, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.

Wallace witnessed the worst impact of sin on humanity as he saw the violence of the Civil War and the Wild West. In life and in his best-selling book, Wallace understood that only the story of Jesus Christ has the power of redemption and reconciliation.

For the follower of Christ, the climax of our lives was the moment God “delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins”(Col.1:13-14). Now we have the privilege of being storytellers of God’s wonderful redemption.

Colossians 1:13-23

[13] He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
[14] in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
[15] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
[16] For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
[17] And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
[18] And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
[19] For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,
[20] and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
[21] And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled
[22] in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight--
[23] if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.

전에…원수가 되었던 너희를…화목하게 하사 — 골로새서 1:21-22

미국 남북전쟁(1861-1865) 이후 몇 해 동안 북부 연방군의 류 월러스 소장은 뉴멕시코 지역의 주지사로 재직했는데, 그때는 뉴멕시코주가 아직 주로 승인되기 전이었습니다. 그곳에서 재직하는 동안 서부개척시대 역사에 등장하는 신화에 가까운 인물들을 여럿 만났는데, 그 중에는 악당 빌리 더 키드와 그를 죽인 팻 개렛 보안관도 포함되어 있습니다. 월러스가 19세기의 “가장 영향력 있는 기독교서적”이라고 불리는 《벤허: 그리스도의 이야기》라는 책을 쓴 곳도 바로 그곳이었습니다.

월러스는 남북전쟁과 서부개척시대의 잔인함을 보면서, 죄가 인간성에 미치는 최악의 결과를 목격했습니다. 월러스는 그의 삶과 그의 베스트셀러 저서를 통해 오직 예수 그리스도의 이야기만이 구속과 화해를 이룰 수 있는 능력이 있음을 알았습니다.

그리스도를 따르는 사람들로서, 우리 인생에서 가장 절정의 순간은 하나님이 “우리를 흑암의 권세에서 건져내사 그의 사랑의 아들의 나라로 옮기셨으니 그 아들 안에서 우리가 속량 곧 죄 사함을 얻게 되는”(골 1:13-14) 때였습니다. 이제 우리는 하나님의 놀라운 속량에 대해 이야기할 수 있는 특권을 갖게 되었습니다.


주님, 오늘 내가 하는 말들을 지켜주소서.
주님의 사랑과 은혜의 말씀으로 저를 채워주시고,
듣는 이들의 마음이 주님을 향하도록 그 말씀을 사용해주소서.
저는 주님 없이는 아무것도 할 수 없습니다.

골로새서 1:13-23

[13] 그가 우리를 흑암의 권세에서 건져내사 그의 사랑의 아들의 나라로 옮기셨으니
[14] 그 아들 안에서 우리가 속량 곧 죄 사함을 얻었도다
[15] 그는 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상이시요 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이시니
[16] 만물이 그에게서 창조되되 하늘과 땅에서 보이는 것들과 보이지 않는 것들과 혹은 왕권들이나 주권들이나 통치자들이나 권세들이나 만물이 다 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었고
[17] 또한 그가 만물보다 먼저 계시고 만물이 그 안에 함께 섰느니라
[18] 그는 몸인 교회의 머리시라 그가 근본이시요 죽은 자들 가운데서 먼저 나신 이시니 이는 친히 만물의 으뜸이 되려 하심이요
[19] 아버지께서는 모든 충만으로 예수 안에 거하게 하시고
[20] 그의 십자가의 피로 화평을 이루사 만물 곧 땅에 있는 것들이나 하늘에 있는 것들이 그로 말미암아 자기와 화목하게 되기를 기뻐하심이라
[21] 전에 악한 행실로 멀리 떠나 마음으로 원수가 되었던 너희를
[22] 이제는 그의 육체의 죽음으로 말미암아 화목하게 하사 너희를 거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 그 앞에 세우고자 하셨으니
[23] 만일 너희가 믿음에 거하고 터 위에 굳게 서서 너희 들은 바 복음의 소망에서 흔들리지 아니하면 그리하리라 이 복음은 천하 만민에게 전파된 바요 나 바울은 이 복음의 일꾼이 되었노라
