 God’s Dwelling Place 

Read : Revelation 21:1 - 21:7 

"There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain."  Revelation 21:4

James Oglethorpe (1696–1785) was a British general and member of Parliament who had a vision for a great city. Charged with settling the state of Georgia in North America, he planned the city of Savannah according to that vision. He designed a series of squares, each having a green space and designated areas for churches and shops, with the rest reserved for housing. The visionary thinking of Oglethorpe is seen today in a beautiful, well-organized city that is considered a jewel of the American South. 

In Revelation 21, John received a vision of a different city—the New Jerusalem.

What he said of this city was less about its design and more about the character of who was there. When John described our eternal home, he wrote, “I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them’”(v.3). And because of who was there—God Himself—this dwelling place would be notable for what was not there. Quoting from Isaiah 25:8, John wrote, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death”(v.4). 

No more death! Nor will there be any more “mourning or crying or pain.” All our sorrow will be replaced by the wonderful, healing presence of the God of the universe. This is the home Jesus is preparing for all who turn to Him for forgiveness.

Thank You, Father, that Your Son is preparing a place for us to live with You. Thank You that it will be more than just a wonderful place. It is where we will live with You and know You forever.

Revelation 21:1-7 

[1] Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.

[2] Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

[3] And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

[4] "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

[5] Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

[6] And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.

[7] "He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

요한계시록 21:1 - 21:7

" 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 "  ( 요한계시록 21:4 )

 

제임스 오글소프(1696-1785)는 영국의 장군이자 영국의회 의원이었으며, 위대한 도시에 대한 비전을 가지고 있었습니다. 북아메리카의 조지아 주에 식민지 건설의 임무를 받고, 그는 비전에 따라 사바나 시를 설계하였습니다. 그는 일련의 광장들을 설계한 후에, 각각 그 안에 녹지 공간을 만들고 교회와 상점들을 두었으며, 나머지는 주택건설을 위해 자리를 남겨두었습니다. 우리는 오늘날 미국 남부의 보석으로 여겨지는 아주 정비가 잘 되어 있는 아름다운 도시 안에서 오글소프의 선견지명을 볼 수 있습니다.  

 

요한계시록 21장에서 요한은 새 예루살렘이라는 새로운 도시의 환상을 보았습니다. 요한은 이 도시의 설계에 대한 설명보다는 그 도시에 계시는 분의 특성에 관해 더 많이 언급하고 있습니다.

요한이 우리의 영원한 집을 묘사할 때, 그는 “내가 들으니 보좌에서 큰 음성이 나서 이르되 보라 하나님의 장막이 사람들과 함께 있으매 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시리니 그들은 하나님의 백성이 되고 하나님은 친히 그들과 함께 계셔서”(3절)라고 썼습니다.

거기에는 하나님 그분이 계시기 때문에 존재할 수 없는 것이 있음을 주목해야 만합니다.

요한은 이사야 25장 8절의 말씀을 인용하여 하나님께서 “모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아주시니 다시는 사망이 없고”(4절)라고 썼습니다.  

 

다시는 사망이 없습니다! 또한 더 이상 “애통이나 눈물이나 아픔”이 없을 것입니다. 우리의 모든 슬픔은 놀라운, 치유하시는 만유의 하나님의 임재로 바뀔 것입니다. 바로 이곳이 용서 받기 위해 예수님께로 나온 모든 사람들을 위해 주님이 준비하고 계시는 집입니다.

하나님 아버지,

하나님의 아들 예수께서 우리에게 하나님과 함께 거할 처소를 준비하심에 감사드립니다.

그곳은 단순히 멋진 곳 그 이상의 곳이기에 감사드립니다. 그곳은 우리가 영원히 하나님과 함께 살면서 하나님을 알게 되는 곳입니다.

< 주님, 주님께서 우리를 위하여 처소를 준비하시는 동안, 그 처소를 위해 우리도 준비시켜 주소서. >

  [1] 또 내가 새 하늘과 새 땅을 보니 처음 하늘과 처음 땅이 없어졌고 바다도 다시 있지 않더라

 

[2] 또 내가 보매 거룩한 성 새 예루살렘이 하나님께로부터 하늘에서 내려오니 그 준비한 것이 신부가 남편을 위하여 단장한 것 같더라

[3] 내가 들으니 보좌에서 큰 음성이 나서 이르되 보라 하나님의 장막이 사람들과 함께 있으매 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시리니 그들은 하나님의 백성이 되고 하나님은 친히 그들과 함께 계셔서

[4] 모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아 주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라

[5] 보좌에 앉으신 이가 이르시되 보라 내가 만물을 새롭게 하노라 하시고 또 이르시되 이 말은 신실하고 참되니 기록하라 하시고

[6] 또 내게 말씀하시되 이루었도다 나는 알파와 오메가요 처음과 마지막이라 내가 생명수 샘물을 목마른 자에게 값없이 주리니

[7] 이기는 자는 이것들을 상속으로 받으리라 나는 그의 하나님이 되고 그는 내 아들이 되리라
