 Strong Conqueror

Today's Scripture Reading : John 18:10 - 18:14 

John 18:10–14, 36–37

[10] Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

[11] So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"

[12] Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.

[13] And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.

[14] Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

[36] Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."

[37] Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

Most of us hope for good government. We vote, we serve, and we speak out for causes we believe are fair and just. But political solutions remain powerless to change the condition of our hearts. 

Many of Jesus’s followers anticipated a Messiah who would bring a vigorous political response to Rome and its heavy-handed oppression. Peter was no exception. When Roman soldiers came to arrest Christ, Peter drew his sword and took a swing at the head of the high priest’s servant, lopping off his ear in the process.

Jesus halted Peter’s one-man war, saying, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”(John 18:11). 

Hours later, Jesus would tell Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders”(v.36).

The Lord’s restraint in that moment, as His life hung in the balance, astonishes us when we ponder the scope of His mission. On a future day, He will lead the armies of heaven into battle. 

John wrote, “With justice he judges and wages war”

(Rev.19:11).

But as He endured the ordeal of His arrest, trial, and crucifixion, Jesus kept His Father’s will in view. 

By embracing death on the cross, He set in motion a chain of events that truly transforms hearts. And in the process, our Strong Conqueror defeated death itself.

Father, how prone I am to reacting quickly rather than wisely. Show me Your will for my life so that I will purposefully choose the path You have for me.

[10] 이에 시몬 베드로가 칼을 가졌는데 그것을 빼어 대제사장의 종을 쳐서 오른편 귀를 베어버리니 그 종의 이름은 말고라

[11] 예수께서 베드로더러 이르시되 칼을 칼집에 꽂으라 아버지께서 주신 잔을 내가 마시지 아니하겠느냐 하시니라

[12] 이에 군대와 천부장과 유대인의 아랫사람들이 예수를 잡아 결박하여

[13] 먼저 안나스에게로 끌고 가니 안나스는 그 해의 대제사장인 가야바의 장인이라

[14] 가야바는 유대인들에게 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽는 것이 유익하다고 권고하던 자러라

[36] 예수께서 대답하시되 내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니니라 만일 내 나라가 이 세상에 속한 것이었더라면 내 종들이 싸워 나로 유대인들에게 넘겨지지 않게 하였으리라 이제 내 나라는 여기에 속한 것이 아니니라

[37] 빌라도가 이르되 그러면 네가 왕이 아니냐 예수께서 대답하시되 네 말과 같이 내가 왕이니라 내가 이를 위하여 태어났으며 이를 위하여 세상에 왔나니 곧 진리에 대하여 증언하려 함이로라 무릇 진리에 속한 자는 내 음성을 듣느니라 하신대

대부분의 사람들은 좋은 정부를 기대한다. 우리가 믿는 공정하고 정의로운 대의를 위해 우리는 투표하고, 봉사하고, 의견을 이야기한다. 그러나 정치적 해결책들은 정작 우리의 마음 상태를 변화시킬 능력이 없다.

예수님을 따르던 많은 사람들은 로마와 로마의 강압적인 박해에 정치적으로 강력하게 대처해줄 수 있는 메시아를 고대했습니다. 베드로도 예외는 아니었습니다. 로마 군인들이 그리스도를 잡으러 왔을 때, 베드로는 칼을 꺼내어 대제사장의 종의 머리를 향해 휘두르다가 그의 귀를 베어버렸습니다.

예수님은 베드로가 독자적으로 싸우는 것을 말리시면서 “칼을 칼집에 꽂으라 아버지께서 주신 잔을 내가 마시지 아니하겠느냐”(요한복음 18:11)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 

몇 시간 후, 예수님은 빌라도에게 “내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니라 만일 내 나라가 이 세상에 속한 것이었더라면 내 종들이 싸워 나로 유대인들에게 넘겨지지 않게 하였으리라”(36절) 라고 말씀하셨습니다.

자신의 목숨이 경각에 달린 그 순간에 주님께서 자제하셨던 것은 주님의 사역의 범위를 생각해볼 때 매우 놀라운 일입니다. 

미래에 주님은 천국의 군대들을 전쟁터로 이끄실 것이기 때문입니다. 요한은 “그가 공의로 심판하며 싸우더라”(요한계시록 19:11)라고 기록했습니다.

그러나 예수님은 결박당하고, 재판 받고, 십자가형에 처해지는 고난을 견뎌내시며, 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 계속 지키셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가의 죽음을 받아들이심으로써, 사람들의 마음을 진실로 변화시키는 일련의 사건들을 시행하셨습니다. 그리고 그 과정 중에, 우리의 강한 승리자께서 사망을 이기셨습니다.

하나님 아버지, 제가 지혜롭게 하기보다는 급하게 반응할 때가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다. 

주님께서 저를 위해 준비하신 길을 제 스스로 선택할 수 있도록 제 삶을 향한 주님의 뜻을 보여주소서.
