 더 깊은 사랑

♣ 말씀 묵상 : 베드로전서 4:7-11 

" 우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라 "(로마서 5:8)

에드윈 스탠튼은 아브라함 링컨 미국 대통령을 처음 만났을 때 그를 “팔이 긴 생물”이라고 부르기까지 하며 개인적으로, 또 공적으로 모욕감을 주었습니다. 

그럼에도 스탠튼의 능력을 인정하고 그를 용서하기로 한 링컨은 나중에 그를 남북전쟁 때 중요한 정부각료로 임명했습니다. 시간이 지나며 스탠튼은 점차 링컨을 친구로서 좋아하게 되었습니다. 대통령이 포드 극장에서 저격당했을 때 링컨의 침상 옆에 앉아 밤을 새우고, 운명했을 때 눈물을 흘리며 “이제 그는 역사 속의 인물이 되었다”라고 나지막이 속삭였던 사람이 바로 스탠튼이었습니다. 

화해는 아름다운 것입니다. 

베드로 사도는 예수님을 따르는 자들에게 그 점에 대해 이렇게 썼습니다. “무엇보다도 뜨겁게 서로 사랑할지니 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라”(벧전 4:8). 

베드로는 이 말을 자신이 예수님을 부인했던 일과(눅 22:54-62), 예수님이 십자가를 통해 그에게 (그리고 우리에게) 베푸신 용서를 생각하며 한 것이라 생각됩니다.

예수님이 십자가에서의 죽음을 통해 보여주셨던 깊은 사랑으로 우리는 죄의 빚에서 벗어나게 되었고 하나님과 화목하는 길로 나아가게 되었습니다(골 1:19-20). 

우리 자신의 힘으로는 다른 사람을 용서할 수 없음을 알고 주님께 도움을 청할 때, 비로소 우리는 주님의 용서에 힙 입어 다른 사람들을 용서할 수 있습니다. 우리 구주께서 그들을 사랑하시기에 우리도 그들을 사랑하고, 그분이 우리를 용서하셨기에 우리도 용서할 때 하나님은 우리에게 지난 일들은 다 잊어버리고 그분과 함께 아름답고 새로운 은혜의 자리로 나아갈 힘을 주십니다.

 Deeper Love

♣ Read : 1 Peter 4:7-11 

" God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."(Romans 5:8)

When they first met, Edwin Stanton snubbed US president Abraham Lincoln personally and professionally—even referring to him as a “long-armed creature.”

But Lincoln appreciated Stanton’s abilities and chose to forgive him, eventually appointing Stanton to a vital cabinet position during the Civil War. 

Stanton later grew to love Lincoln as a friend. It was Stanton who sat by Lincoln’s bed throughout the night after the president was shot at Ford’s Theater and whispered through tears on his passing, “Now he belongs to the ages.”

Reconciliation is a beautiful thing. 

The apostle Peter pointed followers of Jesus there when he wrote, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins” (1 PETER 4:8). Peter’s words cause me to wonder if he was thinking of his own denial of Jesus (LUKE 22:54–62) and the forgiveness Jesus offered him (and us) through the cross.

The deep love Jesus demonstrated through His death on the cross frees us from the debt for our sins and opens the way for our reconciliation with God (COLOSSIANS 1:19-20). His forgiveness empowers us to forgive others as we realize we can’t forgive in our own strength and ask Him to help us. When we love others because our Savior loves them and forgive because He has forgiven us, God gives us strength to let go of the past and walk forward with Him into beautiful new places of grace.
