 회복됨

♣ 말씀 묵상 : 요엘 2:18-27 

" 먹은 햇수대로 너희에게 갚아 주리니 "(요엘 2:25)

2003년에 모르몬 귀뚜라미가 만연해 2천5백만 달러가 넘는 작물 피해가 발생했습니다. 그 수가 얼마나 많았던지 발걸음을 옮길 때마다 귀뚜라미가 밟혔습니다. 

1848년에 유타주의 모르몬 개척자들의 작물에 타격을 준 데서 이름 붙여진 이 메뚜기같이 생긴 곤충은 몸길이가 불과 5~7.5센티미터 정도밖에 되지않지만 평생 먹어치우는 식물의 양은 놀랍게도 약 17킬로그램이나 됩니다. 그것들이 만연해 농부들의 생계와 해당 주와나라 경제 전반에 미치는 여파는 엄청나게 파괴적일 수 있습니다.

구약성경의 요엘 선지자는 온 유다 민족이 불순종한 결과로 유사한 곤충 떼가 유다 나라 전체를 파괴하는 모습을 기록했습니다. 그는 이전 세대에서 본 것과는 전혀 다른 메뚜기 떼가(일부 성경학자들은 외국군대를 은유적으로 표현한 것으로 봄) 침범할 것이라고 예언했습니다(욜 1:2). 메뚜기들은 가는 곳마다 모든 것을 훼손하고 사람들을 기근과 빈곤으로 몰아넣었습니다. 그러나 백성들이 죄의 길에서 돌아서고 하나님께 용서를 구하면, 주님께서 “메뚜기가 먹은 햇수대로 [그들에게] 갚아주리니”(2:25)라고 요엘은 말하고 있습니다. 

유다의 예가 우리에게 주는 교훈이 있습니다. 곤충들처럼 우리의 죄악도 하나님이 우리를 위해 예정해 두신 풍성하고 향기로운 삶을 조금씩 갉아먹는다는 것입니다. 

우리가 주님께로 향하여 과거에 잘못 선택했던 것들에서 돌이킬 때, 주님은 우리의 수치를 제거해주시고 주님 안에서 풍성한 삶을 다시 회복시키시겠다고 약속해주십니다.

오늘 하나님께 어떤 용서를 구하시겠습니까?

"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten."
(Joel 2:25)

A 2003 infestation of Mormon crickets caused more than$25 million in lost crops. The crickets came in such numbers that people couldn’t so much as take a step without finding one underfoot. 

The grasshopper-like insect, named for attacking the crops of the Utah pioneers in 1848, can eat an astounding thirty-eight pounds of plant material in their lifetimes, despite being merely two to three inches long. 

The impact of infestations on famers’ livelihoods—and the overall economy of a state or country—can be devastating.

The Old Testament prophet Joel described a horde of similar insects ravaging the entire nation of Judah as a consequence for their collective disobedience. He foretold an invasion of locusts (a metaphor for a foreign army, in the minds of some Bible scholars) like nothing previous generations had seen (JOEL 1:2). 

The locusts would lay waste to everything in their path, driving the people into famine and poverty. If, however, the people would turn from their sinful ways and ask God for forgiveness, Joel says the Lord would “repay [them] for the years the locusts have eaten” (2:25).

We too can learn from Judah’s lesson: like insects, our wrongdoings eat away at the fruitful, fragrant life God intended for us. When we turn toward Him, and away from our past choices, He promises to remove our shame and restore us to an abundant life in Him.
