Good Intentions

The ephod became a snare to Gideon and to his house.
(Judges 8:27)

Have you ever had one of those "I was just trying to help" moments? Maybe you offered to carry the cake to the table and you dropped it. Or perhaps you offered to dog-sit your neighbor's pooch and the little guy ran away.

In Judges 8, it appears that Gideon tried to do a good thing. But the result was tragic. Impressed by his military exploits, the men of Israel asked Gideon to be their king. To his credit, he refused (Judges 8:22-23). But then he asked them to donate gold earrings, which he made into an "ephod" (v.27). This was either a sacred garment worn by the high priest or some type of image. Why did he do this? We don't know for sure, but Gideon may have been trying to provide spiritual leadership. Whatever his motive was, God hadn't told him to do this.

When Gideon set up the ephod in Ophrah, it drew the people's attention away from worship of the Lord and led them into idolatry (v.27). And as soon as Gideon died, the people found it easy to go back to worshiping the Baals (v.33).

Gideon may have had good intentions, but he made the mistake of acting without consulting the Lord.
Let's be careful not to allow anything to take our eyes off our loving, holy God or it will lead us and others astray.

“그것 (에봇)이 기드온과 그 집에 올무가 되니라” (사사기 8:27)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
당신은 “그냥 좀 도와주려고 했을 뿐인데”하는 난감한 상황에 처한 적이 있습니까? 케이크를 테이블로 옮겨 주려다 그만 떨어뜨렸다거나, 이웃집의 개를 봐주겠다고 했는데 그 조그만 녀석이 그만 도망을 가 버렸다든가 하는 일들 말입니다.

사사기 8장에서 기드온은 선한 일을 하려 했던 것 같습니다. 그러나 그 결과는 처참했습니다. 전투에 이긴 것을 높이 받아들인 이스라엘의 백성은 기드온에게 왕이 되어달라고 간청했습니다. 기드온은 명예롭게 이를 거절했습니다(삿 8:22-23). 그러나 그는 백성들에게 금 귀걸이들을 헌납하라고 하여 “에봇”을 만들었습니다(27절). 이것은 대제사장이 입었던 거룩한 장식물이 되거나 일종의 우상이 되는 것이었습니다. 기드온은 왜 이런 일을 했을까요? 확실히 알 수는 없지만 그가 백성들에게 영적 지도력을 보여주려고 했던 것일 수 있습니다. 그의 의도가 무엇이었든지 하나님께서는 그렇게 하라고 지시하지 않았습니다.

기드온이 오브라에 에봇을 세운 것은 백성들의 관심을 주님을 경배하는 데에서 돌려 그들로 하여금 우상 숭배를 하게 만들었습니다(27절). 그리고 기드온이 세상을 떠나자마자 백성은 다시 쉽게 바알을 숭배하게 되었습니다(33절).

기드온은 좋은 뜻으로 시작했을지 모르지만 하나님과 상의하지 않고 행동을 한 것은 잘못이었습니다. 우리는 이세상 어느 것도 거룩하신 사랑의 하나님에게서 우리의 눈을 돌려 한눈을 팔게 하지 못하도록 주의해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 그것은 우리와 다른 사람들을 나쁜 길로 접어들게 만들 것입니다.

하나님의 말씀은
우리의 갈 길을 밝혀주는 등불
하나님 말씀에 순종하면
길을 잃지 않습니다.
