 Profitable Reading

"You have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."
(2 Timothy 3:15)

Bible scholar William Barclay recalls the experience of a group of British soldiers during World War I. For a long time the men were in a relatively quiet standoff with the enemy. Among them was an atheist who, trying to fill up the empty days, went to the chaplain to ask if any books were available. The only book the chaplain had was the Bible.

The atheist refused the Bible at first, but then he took it and began to read the Old Testament at random. He came across the story of Esther and was so engrossed by it that he decided to read the whole Bible. As he did, he realized that what he was reading was true, and he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

The apostle Paul stated in 2 Timothy 3:16 that "all Scripture . . . is profitable." It gives people the wisdom that leads to "salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (v.15).
Even passages that may seem boring and lacking in spiritual value have the power to transform people's lives.

If in our own reading we come across passages that we find uninspiring at first, let's trust the Holy Spirit to speak to our hearts and change our lives.
Remember, when it comes to the Bible, all of it- from Genesis to Revelation- is inspired and profitable (v.16).

"또 네가 어려서부터 성경을 알았나니 성경은 능히 너로 하여금 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음으로 말미암아 구원에 이르는 지혜가 있게 하느리라" (디모데후서 3:15)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
성경학자 윌리엄 바클리가 1차 대전중 겪었던 영국군인들의 경험담을 이야기 합니다. 오랫동안 병사들은 적과 비교적 평온한 대치 상태에 있었습니다. 그들 가운데 무신론자 한 사람이 무료한 날들을 떼우기 위해 무슨 책이 없느냐고 군목에게 가서 물었습니다. 군목이 가진 책이라고는 오직 성경책 뿐이었습니다.

그 무신론자는 처음에는 성경을 거부했지만 이내 성경책을 받아서 구약을 펼쳐 닥치는대로 읽기 시작했습니다. 에스더를 읽게되자 이야기에 매우 심취된 그는 나머지 성경 전체를 읽기로 마음 먹었습니다.
그는 성경을 읽어 나가면서 자신이 읽고 있는 것이 진리라는 것을 깨닫게 되었고 예수 그리스도를 자신의 구주이자 주님으로 영접했습니다.

바울사도는 디모데후서 3:16에서
"모든 성경은… 유익한 것" 이라고 말합니다. 성경은 사람들로 하여금
"그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음으로 말미암아 구원에 이르는 지혜가 있게"
(15절) 합니다.
지루하고 영적 가치가 없게 느껴지는 구절들도 사람들의 삶을 변화시키는 힘이 있습니다.

우리가 처음 성경을 읽을 때 다소 감흥이 없는 구절을 접하더라도 성령님께서 우리의 심령에 말씀하셔서 우리의 삶을 변화시켜 주실 것을 믿읍시다.
모든 성경은 창세기에서 계시록까지 하나님의 감동으로 된 것으로 유익한 것임을 명심하십시오 (16절).

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
성경은 우리를 사로잡고 심판하며 우리 영혼에 하나님의 진리를 드러내는
힘이 있습니다.
이는 그안에 우리를 깨끗케하고 완전케 하는
유일하신 그분의 복음이 있기 때문입니다.
