"I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you." (John 13:15)

If you take a course on writing or attend a writer’s conference, you’ll likely hear the phrase, “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, “show” your readers what is happening, don’t just tell them. Don’t tell readers what you did; describe doing it.

One of the reasons we tend to tell rather than show is that it’s easier and faster. Showing how to do something requires time and effort. In teaching, it’s easier to tell students what’s wrong with what they did than to show them how to do it right. The latter, however, is more effective.

For thousands of years, the Jewish people had only the law telling them what to do and what not to do. But then came Jesus Christ, who showed them how to live the life God had been telling them about all along. Jesus didn’t just say, “Be humble”;
He “humbled Himself” (Phil. 2:8). He didn’t just say, “Forgive others”; He forgave us (Col. 3:13). He didn’t just say, “Love God and your neighbors”; He demonstrated love by His actions (John 15:12).

Christ’s perfect example of love shows how great God’s love is for us and how we are to show His love to others.

 보여주는 것과 말하는 것

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
글쓰기 강의를 듣거나 작가들의 모임에 참석하면, 아마도 “말로 하지 말고 보여주라.”는 말을 꼭 듣게 될 것입니다. 다른 말로하면, 독자들에게 그저 설명만 하지 말고 진행되고 있는 상황을 ‘보여주라’는 것입니다. 독자들에게 무엇을 했는지 설명하지 말고, 그것을 어떻게 하는지 묘사하라는 것입니다.

말하는 것이 보여주는 것보다 훨씬 쉽고 빠르다는 이유로 우리는 보여주기보다는 말로 하려는 경향이 있습니다. 어떤 일을 어떻게 하는가를 보여주려면 시간과 노력이 필요합니다. 가르칠 때에도, 학생들의 잘못을 지적하는 것이 올바르게 하는 방법을 보여주는 것보다 쉽습니다. 그러나 더 효과적인 것은 후자입니다.

수천 년 동안 유대인들은 그들이 해야 할 것과 하지 말아야 할 것을 말해주는 율법만 가지고 있었습니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도께서 오셔서 그동안 하나님께서 그들에게 말씀해 오셨던 삶을 살아가는 방법을 보여주셨습니다. 예수님은 “겸손하라”고 말씀하셨을 뿐만 아니라 친히 “자신을 낮추셨습니다”(빌 2:8). 주님은 “서로 용서하라”라는 말씀만 하신 것이 아니라 우리를 용서해주셨습니다(골 3:13). “하나님을 사랑하고 또 네 이웃을 사랑하라”고 말씀만 하시지 않고, 몸소 사랑을 보여주셨습니다(요 15:12).

예수님이 보여주신 사랑의 완벽한 본보기는 우리를 향하신 하나님의 사랑이 얼마나 큰지를 보여주고, 동시에 우리도 다른 사람들에게 어떻게 주님의 사랑을 나타내야 하는지를 보여줍니다.

너무도 크고 영광스러운 주님의 은혜가
갈보리로부터 흘러나오니
그 사랑을 베푸신 주님을 송축합니다
