 THE WINDING ROAD

"He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber." (Psalm 121:3)

In his book [ A Sweet and Bitter Providence ] , John Piper offers these thoughts about God’s providence and guidance:
“Life is not a straight line leading from one blessing to the next and then finally to heaven. Life is a winding and troubled road. . . . God is not just showing up after the trouble and cleaning it up.
He is plotting the course and managing the troubles with
far-reaching purposes for our good and for the glory of Jesus Christ.”

The Jews journeying to Jerusalem for the annual feasts (Deut. 16:16) had the assurance of knowing that the Lord was plotting their course and managing the winding and troubled roads for them.
They expressed this assurance in Psalm 121, a pilgrim song. The question, “From whence comes my help?” did not express doubt but affirmation in the Lord who rules supreme (vv.1-2).
Unlike a guard who sometimes slumbered, or the god Baal who needed to be rustled out of his stupor (1 Kings 18:27),
the Lord is fully alert and secured the journey of His people with providential care (vv.3-4).
The Lord, who rescued Israel, would continue to help, preserve, and walk with His people.

Life is a winding road with unknown perils and troubles, but we can be certain of God’s providence, security, and care.

 굽이굽이 인생 길

"여호와께서 너를 실족하지 아니하게 하시며 너를 지키시는 이가 졸지 아니하시리로다" (시편 121:3)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
존 파이퍼는 그의 저서 『달고도 쓴 하나님의 섭리』에서 다음과 같이 하나님의 섭리에 대한 생각을 피력했습니다. “인생은 축복에서 축복으로 이어지다가 마지막에 천국으로 가는 일직선이 아니라, 복잡하게 이어지는 고난의 길이다. … 하나님은 고난이 시작되면 곧 나타나서 해결해주시는 분이 아니라, 우리의 선함과 예수 그리스도의 영광이라는 원대한 목적을 위하여 우리의 인생길을 계획하시고, 거기에 따르는 고난들을 다스리신다.”

매년 열리는 축제를 위해 예루살렘으로 올라갔던 유대인들은(신 16:16) 하나님이 그들의 진로를 미리 정하셔서 구부러지고 험한 길에서도 그들을 인도해주신다는 확신을 가지고 있었습니다.
그들은 순례자의 노래로 알려진 시편 121편에서 이와 같은 확신을 표현하였습니다. “나의 도움이 어디서 올까”라는 물음은 의문이라기보다 천지를 다스리시는 하나님에 대한 확신을 표현한 것이었습니다(1-2절).
하나님은 가끔씩 조는 파수꾼이나 흔들어주어야만 정신 차리는 멍청한 바알신(왕상 18:27)이 아니라, 늘 깨어 있어 주님의 백성들이 걸어가는 길을 섭리에 따라 지키시는 분이십니다(3-4절).
이스라엘을 구원하셨던 하나님은 그분의 백성들을 계속 도우시고 지키시고 동행해주십니다.

● 오늘의 기도 ●
사랑하는 주님, 때때로 인생은 위험한 일과 구불구불한 길로
가득 차 있는 것 같이 보입니다. 그러나 주님이 우리의 갈 길을
미리 정해놓으시고, 우리의 걸음걸음을 지켜보신다는
확신을 주시니 감사합니다.
