How Deserving Are We?

"The Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness."
(Deuteronomy 9:6)

I remember the day our secondhand refrigerator finally broke down. As a young newlywed employed by a Christian ministry, I didn't have much money to spend on repairs. Not knowing where to turn for reliable help, I called a friend in the electrical business. He assured me that he would handle the problem. Later that evening, I found a brand-new refrigerator in our kitchen. I asked myself, "What did I do to deserve such help?"

It's easy to think we deserve the help that others graciously give us. When we're successful, we tend to assume that we deserve our possessions. Success goes to our head. It makes us proud and can even turn us away from God.

In Deuteronomy 9, we read of God's reminder to Israel about the reason they would be successful. God wanted His people to remember that He was leading them into the land to fulfill His purpose and promises. They would succeed because of Him, not because of their own righteousness (vv.4-5). He knew they would be tempted to become ungrateful after they were prospering in the Promised Land.

Ungratefulness is a temptation for us today as well. If our endeavors are successful, let's make sure we are thankful to God for His goodness, help, and protection.

 우리가 얼마나 자격이 있나?

"네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 이 아름다운 땅을 기업으로 주신 것이 네 의로움을 인함이 아니니라" (신명기 9:6)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
나는 우리의 중고 냉장고가 결국 망가져 버린 날을 기억합니다. 어떤 교회에서 사역하던 신혼초의 젊은 나로서는 수리비로 쓸 돈이 별로 없었습니다.
어디에다 믿고 도움을 청할지도 몰라서 나는 전기 사업을 하고 있는 친구에게 전화했습니다. 그는 자기가 해결해 주겠다고 확실하게 말했습니다.
그날 저녁 나는 우리 집 부엌에서 새 냉장고를 보고는 "내가 무슨 자격으로 이런 도움을 받을 수 있는가?" 라고 자문해 보았습니다.

우리는 때로 다른 사람들이 베푸는 친절한 도움을 받을 자격이 있다 생각하기 쉽습니다. 우리의 사업이 번창할 때 우리의 소유물을 당연한 것으로 생각하는 경향이 있습니다.
성공은 우리의 머리에 영향을 줍니다. 그것은 우리를 교만하게 하고 나아가 우리를 하나님으로부터 등돌리게까지 합니다.

신명기 9장에서 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들에게 그들이 성공하게 된 이유를 상기시키시는 것을 봅니다.
하나님께서는 그의 백성들이 하나님의 목적과 언약들을 이루기 위해 그들을 가나안 땅으로 이끌어 가심을 기억하기를 바라셨습니다. 그들은 자신들의 의로움 때문이 아니라 하나님 때문에 승리하게 되는 것이었습니다 (4-5절).
하나님은 그 백성이 약속의 땅에서 번성하게되면 감사함을 잊어버리게 될 것을 아셨습니다.

감사하지 못함은 오늘날 우리도 쉽게 빠질 수 있는 유혹입니다. 우리의 노력이 성공을 거둘 때, 우리는 하나님께 그의 선하심, 도우심, 그리고 지켜주심에 대해 감사하는 일을 잊어서는 안되겠습니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
주여 나의 마음이 교만치 않도록 도와 주소서,
나의 모든 재능이 당신에게로부터 왔고
내가 가진 어떤 것도 내 것이라 주장할 수 없으니
주의 자비와 은총이 내 삶에 넘치나이다!
