Amani, which means “peace” in Swahili, is the name of a Labrador retriever pup that has some special friends. Amani lives with two young cheetahs at the Dallas Zoo. Zoologists placed the animals together so the cheetahs could learn Amani’s relaxed ways. Since dogs are generally at ease in public settings, the experts predict that Amani will be a “calming influence” in the cheetahs’ lives as they grow up together.

David was a soothing influence in King Saul’s life when a “distressing spirit” troubled him (1 Sam.16:14). When Saul’s servants learned of his problem, they thought music might ease his affliction. One servant summoned David, who was a skilled harpist. Whenever the king became troubled, David would play the harp. “Then Saul would become refreshed and well” (v.23).

We crave refreshment and well-being when we are plagued by anger, fear, or sadness. The God of the Bible is a “God of peace”(Heb.13:20-21), One who gives His Holy Spirit to everyone who believes in Him. When we’re agitated or anxious, we can remember that God’s Spirit produces power, love, and self-control (2 Tim.1:7).

1 Samuel 16:14-23

[14] But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him.
[15] And Saul's servants said to him, "Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.
[16] "Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp; and it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well."
[17] So Saul said to his servants, "Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me."
[18] Then one of the servants answered and said, "Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him."
[19] Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep."
[20] And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul.
[21] So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer.
[22] Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight."
[23] And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

아마니는 스와힐리어로 “평화”를 뜻하는 말인데, 이 이름을 가진 래브라도 종 강아지에게는 특별한 친구들이 있습니다. 아마니는 댈러스 동물원에서 두 마리의 어린 치타와 함께 삽니다. 동물학자들은 이들 동물들을 합사시켜서 치타들이 아마니의 느긋한 점을 배울 수 있게 했습니다. 일반적으로 개들은 대중 앞에서 편안해 하기 때문에 전문가들은 아마니가 치타들과 함께 자라면서 “조용한 영향력”을 끼치게 될 것이라고 예측합니다.

다윗은 “악령”이 사울왕을 괴롭힐 때 그의 삶을 진정시키는데 영향을 주었습니다(삼상 16:14). 사울의 신하들이 왕의 문제를 알고 나서 음악이 그의 고통을 덜어줄지도 모른다고 생각하여, 한 신하가 수금 연주가 뛰어난 다윗을 불러들였습니다. 다윗은 왕이 괴로워할 때마다 수금을 연주했고, “그 때마다 사울에게 내린 악한 영이 떠났고, 사울은 제정신이 들었습니다”(23절, 새번역).

● 오늘의 묵상 ●

우리는 분노, 공포, 슬픔으로 괴로울 때 회복과 안락을 갈망합니다. 성경의 하나님은 그분을 믿는 누구에게나 그분의 성령을 주시는 “평강의 하나님”(히 13:20-21)이십니다.
우리가 동요되거나 불안할 때, 우리는 하나님의 영이 능력과 사랑과 절제하는 마음을 주신다는 것을 기억해야 합니다(딤후 1:7). 우리 삶에 미치는 하나님의 영향력은 평안함과 온전함으로 이끌어주는 진정 효과를 만들어낼 수 있습니다.

하나님 아버지,
우리 마음에 평화를 주시니 감사합니다.
그 어느 것도 그것을 빼앗아갈 능력이 없습니다.
하나님의 평화가 함께 계시니 감사합니다.

[15] 사울의 신하들이 그에게 이르되 보소서 하나님께서 부리시는 악령이 왕을 번뇌하게 하온즉
[16] 원하건대 우리 주께서는 당신 앞에서 모시는 신하들에게 명령하여 수금을 잘 타는 사람을 구하게 하소서 하나님께서 부리시는 악령이 왕에게 이를 때에 그가 손으로 타면 왕이 나으시리이다 하는지라
[17] 사울이 신하에게 이르되 나를 위하여 잘 타는 사람을 구하여 내게로 데려오라 하니
