The administrators of the high school in Barrow, Alaska, were tired of seeing students get into trouble and drop out at a rate of 50 percent. To keep students interested, they started a football team, which offered them a chance to develop personal skills, teamwork, and learn life lessons. The problem with football in Barrow, which is farther north than Iceland, is that it’s hard to plant a grass field. So they competed on a gravel and dirt field.

Four thousand miles away in Florida, a woman named Cathy Parker heard about the football team and their dangerous field. Feeling that God was prompting her to help, and impressed by the positive changes she saw in the students, she went to work. About a year later, they dedicated their new field, complete with a beautiful artificial-turf playing surface. She had raised thousands of dollars to help some kids she didn’t even know.

This is not about football—or money. It is about remembering “to do good and to share” (Heb. 13:16). The apostle James reminds us that we demonstrate our faith by our actions (2:18). The needs in our world are varied and overwhelming but when we love our neighbor as ourselves, as Jesus said (Mark 12:31), we reach people with God’s love. — Dave Branon


Open our eyes, dear Father, to those in need. Allow
us to find ways—monetarily and otherwise—to help meet those needs.
Help us to take the focus off
ourselves and place it on those who can use our assistance.

James 2:14-20

[14] What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
[15] If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,
[16] and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?
[17] Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
[18] But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
[19] You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!
[20] But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

알래스카 주 배로우에 있는 한 고등학교의 교직원들은 50퍼센트에 달하는 학생들이 문제를 일으키고 자퇴하는 것을 더 이상 두고 볼 수 없었습니다. 그래서 그들은 학생들이 학교에 관심을 계속 가질 수 있도록 미식축구팀을 창설하여, 학생들이 개인기와 팀워크를 개발하고 삶의 교훈까지 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공하였습니다. 아이슬란드보다 더 북쪽에 위치한 배로우에는 잔디를 심을 수 없어서 학생들은 자갈과 흙으로 된 경기장에서 시합을 했습니다.

6,500킬로미터 떨어진 플로리다에 사는 캐시 파커라는 여자분이 이 미식축구팀과 이들의 위험한 경기장에 대한 소식을 들었습니다.
하나님께서 그들을 도와주라고 그녀를 촉구하신다고 느끼고, 또 학생들에게 일어난 긍정적인 변화들을 인상 깊게 접한 그녀는 그들을 도와주기 시작했습니다. 그리고 약 1년 후에, 그곳에 인조 잔디가 멋지게 깔린 새 경기장을 개장할 수 있게 되었습니다. 캐시는 전혀 알지도 못했던 몇 학생들을 돕기 위해 수천 불의 기금을 모았습니다.

이 세상에 우리의 도움을 필요로 하는 일들이 다양하고 수없이 많지만, 예수님의 말씀대로 우리 이웃을 우리 자신처럼 사랑할 때(막 12:31), 우리는 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 전하게 되는 것입니다.

사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 우리의 눈을 열어 다른 사람들의 필요를
보게 하셔서, 금전적으로든 다른 것으로든 그 필요를 채워줄 수 있는
방법들을 찾게 하소서.
우리의 초점을 우리 자신이 아닌 우리의
도움을 필요로 하는 사람들에게로 맞출 수 있게 도와주소서.

< 하나님께 마음을 열어 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 배우고,
손을 펴서 도움을 나누어 주라.>

야고보서 2:14-20

[14] 내 형제들아 만일 사람이 믿음이 있노라 하고 행함이 없으면 무슨 유익이 있으리요 그 믿음이 능히 자기를 구원하겠느냐
[15] 만일 형제나 자매가 헐벗고 일용할 양식이 없는데
[16] 너희 중에 누구든지 그에게 이르되 평안히 가라, 덥게 하라, 배부르게 하라 하며 그 몸에 쓸 것을 주지 아니하면 무슨 유익이 있으리요
[17] 이와 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라
[18] 어떤 사람은 말하기를 너는 믿음이 있고 나는 행함이 있으니 행함이 없는 네 믿음을 내게 보이라 나는 행함으로 내 믿음을 네게 보이리라 하리라
[19] 네가 하나님은 한 분이신 줄을 믿느냐 잘하는도다 귀신들도 믿고 떠느니라
[20] 아아 허탄한 사람아 행함이 없는 믿음이 헛것인 줄을 알고자 하느냐
