 For Now And Forever

"Receive with meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls."
(James 1:21)

Cold terror gripped the heart of a soldier as mortar rounds whistled overhead, rifles cracked, and the enemy closed in. Suddenly he felt ripping pains as a bullet tore into his chest and arm. Yet it wasn't the end for this soldier.
According to an article in The New York Times, the bullet was slowed by a New Testament that he was carrying in his shirt pocket.
Years later, the young man still treasured the blood-stained book with the ragged hole through the middle. He believes it saved his life.

This is a nice story, but it says nothing about the life-saving spiritual help the Bible was designed to give.
In Ezekiel 33, we read that the ancient Israelites used the words of the prophets to make them feel good but not to change their lives.
They misused God's promises to Abraham to support their own claim to the land (v.24).
They found pleasure in listening to the words of the prophet (v.30), yet the Lord said to Ezekiel, "They hear your words, but they do not do them" (v.31).
The result? They came under divine judgment.

Then as now, God's Word is not just to be cherished as a good-luck charm or to soothe the mind by bringing temporary relief from anxiety. It was given to be obeyed so that its help would not be only for this life-but forever.

 지금 그리고 영원토록

" 능히 너의 영혼을 구원할 바 마음에 심긴 도를 온유함으로 받으라 "

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
박격포탄들이 머리 위를 쌩하고 울리며 지나가고, 소총 소리들이 귀를 따갑게 하며, 적군들이 점점 좁혀 들어올 때 한 병사의 가슴속에 싸늘한 공포가 엄습해 왔습니다. 갑자기 총알 하나가 그의 가슴과 팔을 파고들었고 그는 찢어지는 듯한 고통을 느꼈습니다. 그러나 그것이 이 병사의 마지막은 아니었습니다. 뉴욕타임스의 기사에 의하면 그가 셔츠 주머니에 갖고 다니던 신약성경 때문에 총알의 속도가 많이 줄었다고 합니다. 여러 해가 지난 후에도 그 젊은이는 가운데가 너덜너덜하게 구멍이 난 피로 얼룩진 그 책을 소중하게 보관하고 있었습니다. 그는 그 책이 그의 생명을 구했다고 믿고 있습니다.

이것은 아름다운 이야기이긴 하지만, 성경이 씌여진 원래의 목적인 생명을 구하는 영적인 도움에 대해서는 전혀 이야기하지 않고 있습니다. 에스겔서 33장에서 우리는 옛날 이스라엘 백성들이 선지자들의 말을 즐거이 듣는데 그치고 자신들의 삶을 변화시키는 데는 적용하지 못했다는 것을 봅니다. 그들은 하나님께서 아브라함에게 주신 약속을 그들의 땅을 차지하기 위한 구실로 잘못썼던 것입니다 (24절). 그들이 선지자의 말을 듣기를 즐겨 했지만 (30절), 여호와께서는 에스겔에게 "(그들이) 네 말을 들으나 그대로 행치 아니하니" (31절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그들이 어떻게 되었습니까? 하나님의 심판을 받고 말았습니다.

그때나 지금이나 하나님의 말씀을 행운을 가져다주는 장식물로 여기거나 걱정을 일시적으로 덜어주어 마음에 위로가 되기 때문에 소중히 여겨서는 안 됩니다. 하나님의 말씀은 그 도우심이 현재의 삶 뿐 아니라 영원까지 이어지도록 우리더러 순종하라고 주어진 것입니다.

당신의 말씀은 나를 죄에서 구원하고
인도하며 하늘의 길을 보여주는
내 발의 등불이요
내 길의 빛입니다
