Read: Genesis 41:46-57

"God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction."
(Genesis 41:52)

When seemingly needless suffering invades our lives, we often ask ourselves, "Who needs all this grief?" But consider, for a moment, the origin of pearls.

Each pearl is formed by an oyster's internal response to a wound caused by an irritant, such as a grain of sand. Resources of repair rush to the injured area.
The final result is a lustrous pearl. Something beautiful is created that would have been impossible without the wound.

In today's Bible reading, we see Joseph in a position of influence, a position God soon used to feed surrounding nations and Joseph's family during famine. But how did he become influential?
It began with a wound - being sold into slavery (Genesis 39) - which produced a pearl of usefulness. Because Joseph drew on God's resources when humiliated, he became better, not bitter.
He named his second son Ephraim, which means "twice fruitful," and he said, "God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction" (41:52).

Author Paul E. Billheimer says of Joseph, "If human pity could have rescued him from the sad part of his life, the glorious part that followed would have been lost." So if you're suffering, remember: No wounds, no pearls!

오늘의 묵상: 창세기 41: 46 - 57

"하나님이 나로 나의 수고한 땅에서 창성하게 하셨다" (창세기 41:52)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
난데없이 고통스러운 일이 우리의 삶에일어 날 때 우리는 종종 자신에게 물어봅니다. "도대체 이 슬픔이 왜 필요한가 ?" 하지만 진주가 어떻게 생겨나는지를 잠시 생각해 보십시오.

모든 진주는 조개가 모래알 같은 자극물에 의해 상처가 생겼을 때, 그에 대한 내부반응에 의하여 만들어집니다. 상처의 회복을 위한 자원이 상처 입은 부분으로 급히 보내집니다. 그 마지막 결과가 빛나는 진주입니다. 아름다움의 창조는 상처 없이는 불가능 합니다.

오늘의 성경구절을 보면 하나님께서 요셉을 영향력 있는 지위에 올리셔서 기근 때에 주변나라들과 요셉의 가족들을 먹이기 위하여 쓰셨던 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그런데 그는 어떻게 실력자가 되었습니까? 그것은 노예로 팔리는 (창 39장) 아픈 상처에서 시작되었고 그 상처가 결국 주의 일에 쓰임 받는 진주를 만들어 냈습니다. 요셉은 굴욕을 당하였을 때에 하나님께 온전히 의지하였기 때문에 괴롭지 않았고 오히려 더 잘 되었습니다. 요셉은 둘째 아들의 이름을 "두 배의 결실"이라는 뜻을 지닌 에브라임이라고 짓고, "하나님이 나로 나의 수고한 땅에서 창성하게 하셨다" (창 41:52)라고 말하였습니다.

작가 폴 빌 하이머는 요셉에 대하여 다음과 같이 말하였습니다. "만일 인간적인 동정으로 그를 인생의 슬픔에서 구출할 수 있었더라면 그 뒤에 따라올 영광스러움은 상실하였을 것이다." 따라서 만일 당신이 고통을 받고 있다면 이것을 기억하십시오. 상처가 없이는 진주도 없다는것을!

만일 역경을 받아들이고
모든 괴로움을 참으면
우리가 알아야 할 사실을 알게 될것입니다. 슬픔이 유익으로 바뀐다는 것을.
