 Don't Be Afraid !

"God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid." (Isaiah 12:2)

I have an ancient leaf blower that I use to clean up our patio.
It sputters, rattles, smokes, emits irritating fumes, and is considered by my wife (and probably by my neighbors) to be excessively noisy.

But our old dog is utterly indifferent to the racket. When I start up the blower, she doesn't even raise her head, and only reluctantly moves when I blow leaves or dirt in her direction. That's because she trusts me.


A young man who occasionally mows our yard uses a similar blower, but his is not tolerated by our dog. Years ago, when she was a puppy, he teased her with the machine and she has never forgotten. Now, when the man enters the backyard, we have to put her in the house, because she growls, barks, and snarls at him. Same set of circumstances, but the hands that use the blower make all the difference.

So it is with us. Frightening circumstances are less troublesome if we trust the hands that control them. If our world and our lives were governed by a thoughtless and indifferent force, we would have good reason to fear. But the hands that control the universe-God's hands-are wise and compassionate.
We can trust them in spite of our circumstances and not be afraid.

 두려워 말라 !

"하나님은 나의 구원이시라 내가 의뢰하고 두려움이 없으리니" (이사야 12:2)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
나에게는 안뜰을 청소할 때 사용하는 아 주 오래된 낙엽 청소기가 있습니다. 그것은 요란한 소리를 내고 덜거덕거리며, 연기가 나고 자극성 가스를 내뿜는데, 내 아내는 (그리고 아마 이웃사람들도) 그것이 지나칠 정도로 시끄럽다고 생각합니다.

그러나 우리 늙은 암캐는 이 큰 소음에 완전히 무관심합니다. 내가 이 청소기에 시동을 걸 때에도 그 개는 머리조차 들지 않고 있다가, 내가 개 쪽으로 나뭇잎이나 흙들을 날릴 때에야 마지못해서 움직입니다. 그 이유는 그 개가 나를 믿기 때문입니다.

가끔 우리 마당의 잔디를 깎는 젊은이도 비슷한 기계를 사용합니다. 그런데 우리 개 가 그 기계 소리는 참지 못합니다. 몇 년 전 우리 개가 강아지였을 때 그 사람이 그 기계로 강아지를 괴롭힌 적이 있었는데 우리 개는 그것을 지금껏 잊지 않고 있습니다. 요즘 그 젊은이가 뒷마당으로 들어올 때면 우리는 개를 집안으로 들여놔야 합니다. 왜냐하면 개가 그 젊은이에게 이빨을 보이며 으르렁거리고 짖어대기 때문입니다. 똑같은 상황이지만 기계를 사용하는 손이 이 모든 차이를 만들어 냅니다.

우리들도 이와 마찬가지입니다. 끔찍한 처지에서도 만일 우리 가 그 상황을 주관하는 손길을 믿는다면 별로 문제가 되지 않습니다. 만일 우리의 세상과 삶이 생각도 없고 무관심한 힘에 의하여 다스려진다면, 우리는 두려워해야 할 당연한 이유가 있습니다. 그러나 우주를 주관하시는하나님의 손은 지혜롭고 이해심이 많으십니다. 우리의 처지에도 불구하고, 우리는 하나님의 손을 믿고 두려워하지 않을 수 있습니다.

두려움과 걱정이 당신의 믿음을 시험하고
근심이 당신을 맹렬히 몰아 부칠 때
기억하라, 하나님이 주관하시며
하나님은 결코 실패하지 않으신다는 것을

두려워할 것이 하나도 없습니다.>
