" When the people complained, it displeased the Lord; for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused. "
( Numbers 11:1)

When Max Lucado participated in a half-Ironman triathlon, he experienced the negative power of complaint. He said, “After the 1.2-mile swim and the 56-mile bike ride, I didn’t have much energy left for the 13.1-mile run. Neither did the fellow jogging next to me. He said, ‘This stinks. This race is the dumbest decision I’ve ever made.’ I said, ‘Goodbye.’ ” Max knew that if he listened too long, he would start agreeing with him.
So he said goodbye and kept running.

Among the Israelites, too many people listened too long to complaints and began to agree with them. This displeased God, and for good reason. God had delivered the Israelites from slavery, and agreed to live in their midst, but they still complained. Beyond the hardship of the desert, they were dissatisfied with God’s provision of manna. In their complaint, Israel forgot that the manna was a gift to them from God’s loving hand (Num.11:6). Because complaining poisons the heart with ingratitude and can be a contagion, God had to judge it.

This is a sure way to say “goodbye” to complaining and ingratitude: Each day, let’s rehearse the faithfulness and goodness of God to us.

short memories and bad attitudes. Help us to remember
and be grateful for all that You have provided.
And help us to tell others of the good things You have done for us.

Numbers 11:1-10

[1] Now when the people complained, it displeased the LORD; for the LORD heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp.
[2] Then the people cried out to Moses, and when Moses prayed to the LORD, the fire was quenched.
[3] So he called the name of the place Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.
[4] Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: "Who will give us meat to eat?
[5] "We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic;
[6] "but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!"
[7] Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium.
[8] The people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, cooked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and its taste was like the taste of pastry prepared with oil.
[9] And when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.
[10] Then Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and the anger of the LORD was greatly aroused; Moses also was displeased.

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

맥스 루카도는 단축 철인3종 경기에 참가했을 때 불평으로 인해 부정적으로 생각하는 힘을 가지게됨을 경험하게 되었습니다. 그는 말했습니다. 1.9킬로미터의 수영과 90킬로미터의 자전거 달리기를 마치고 나니, 남은 21.1킬로미터를 달릴 힘이 없었습니다.
내 옆에서 달리고 있던 한 참가자도 마찬가지였습니다. 그는 ‘죽을 맛이군. 이 경기는 내가 내린 결정 중 가장 미련한 거야’라고 말했습니다. 나는 그에게 ‘잘 가’라고 말했습니다.”
맥스는 그의 불평을 너무 오래 듣고 있으면 자신도 그와 같이 생각할 것이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 그는 ‘잘 가’라고 말하고 계속 달렸습니다.

이스라엘백성들 중 너무 많은 사람들이 너무 오랫동안 불평을 듣고 그 불평에 동의하기 시작했습니다. 이것은 하나님을 진노하게 했고, 하나님이 그러실만한 충분한 이유가 있었습니다.
하나님은 이스라엘백성들을 노예생활로부터 해방시키신 후 그들 가운데 함께 하시겠다고 하셨는데도 그들은 여전히 불평했습니다. 사막에서의 고생은 말할 것도 없고, 하나님이 내려주시는 만나에 대해서도 그들은 불만을 가졌습니다.
그들은 만나가 하나님께서 사랑의 손길로 주시는 선물이라는 것을 잊고 불평했습니다(민 11:6).
불평은 사람의 마음에 독처럼 퍼져 감사할 줄 모르게 만들고 또 전염될 수도 있기 때문에, 하나님은 그들의 불평을 심판하셔야만 했습니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●

불평과 감사하지 못하는 마음에 “잘 가”라고 할 확실한 방법이 있습니다.
우리를 향한 하나님의 신실하심과 선하심을 매일매일 되풀이해서 말하십시오.


주님, 주님은 우리에게 너무나 많은 것을 주셨습니다. 우리의 잦은
망각과 부정적인 태도를 용서해주소서. 주님께서 베푸신 모든 것들을
기억하고 감사할 수 있게 도와주소서.
그리고 주님께서 우리에게
행하신 선한 일들을 다른 사람들에게 전할 수 있게 도와주소서.

민수기 11:1-10

[1] 여호와께서 들으시기에 백성이 악한 말로 원망하매 여호와께서 들으시고 진노하사 여호와의 불을 그들 중에 붙여서 진영 끝을 사르게 하시매
[2] 백성이 모세에게 부르짖으므로 모세가 여호와께 기도하니 불이 꺼졌더라
[3] 그 곳 이름을 다베라라 불렀으니 이는 여호와의 불이 그들 중에 붙은 까닭이었더라
[4] 그들 중에 섞여 사는 다른 인종들이 탐욕을 품으매 이스라엘 자손도 다시 울며 이르되 누가 우리에게 고기를 주어 먹게 하랴
[5] 우리가 애굽에 있을 때에는 값없이 생선과 오이와 참외와 부추와 파와 마늘들을 먹은 것이 생각나거늘
[6] 이제는 우리의 기력이 다하여 이 만나 외에는 보이는 것이 아무 것도 없도다 하니
[7] 만나는 깟씨와 같고 모양은 진주와 같은 것이라
[8] 백성이 두루 다니며 그것을 거두어 맷돌에 갈기도 하며 절구에 찧기도 하고 가마에 삶기도 하여 과자를 만들었으니 그 맛이 기름 섞은 과자 맛 같았더라
[9] 밤에 이슬이 진영에 내릴 때에 만나도 함께 내렸더라
[10] 백성의 온 종족들이 각기 자기 장막 문에서 우는 것을 모세가 들으니라 이러므로 여호와의 진노가 심히 크고 모세도 기뻐하지 아니하여
