 Defeated Adversary

Ephesians 6:10 - 6:18

" Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. "
( 1 Peter 5:8 )

The roaring lion is the legendary “king of the jungle.” But the only lions many of us see are the lethargic felines that reside in zoos. Their days are filled with lots of rest, and their dinner is served to them without the lions having to lift a single paw.

In their natural habitat, however, lions aren’t always living a laid-back life. Their hunger tells them to go hunting, and in doing so they seek the young, weak, sick, or injured. Crouching in tall grasses, they slowly creep forward. Then with a sudden pounce, they clamp their jaws to the body of their victim.

Peter used “a roaring lion” as a metaphor for Satan. He is a confident predator, looking for easy prey to devour (1 Peter 5:8). In dealing with this adversary, God’s children must be vigilant at putting “on the whole armor of God” and thus they can “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might”(Eph.6:10-11).

The good news is that Satan is a defeated adversary. While he is a powerful foe, those who are protected by salvation, prayer, and the Word of God need not be paralyzed in fear at this roaring lion. We are “kept by the power of God”(1 Peter 1:5). James 4:7 assures us: “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” — Cindy Hess Kasper


Lord, we know that our enemy seeks to devour us.

Word that He who is in us is greater than he

Ephesians 6:10-18

[10] Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
[11] Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
[12] For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
[13] Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
[14] Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
[15] and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
[16] above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
[17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
[18] praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints--

" 근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니 "

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

포효하는 사자는 전설적으로 “정글의 왕”이라고 불립니다. 그러나 우리가 유일하게 보는 사자들은 동물원에 있는 무기력한 고양잇과 동물에 불과합니다.
이 사자들은 낮 시간을 주로 쉬면서 보내고, 발톱 한 번 쓰지 않아도 그들에게 저녁식사가 제공됩니다.

그러나 야생의 환경에서는 사자들이 항상 한가롭게 사는 것은 아닙니다. 배가 고플 때는 먹이를 찾아 나서고, 그러는 가운데 어리고 약하고 병들고 부상당한 먹잇감을 찾습니다. 우거진 수풀에 웅크리고 있다가 천천히 기어서 접근합니다. 그리고는 날쌔게 달려들어 사냥감을 입으로 꽉 뭅니다.

베드로는 사탄을 “우는 사자”에 비유하였습니다. 사탄은 삼키기 쉬운 먹이를 찾아다니는 자신만만한 약탈자입니다(벧전 5:8). 이런 사탄을 대적하기 위해서 하나님의 자녀들은 “하나님의 전신갑주”를 입고 깨어 있어야 합니다. 그리고 그럴 때 “주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여”질 수 있습니다(엡 6:10-11).

● 오늘의 묵상 ●

반가운 소식은 사탄은 이미 패망한 적이라는 사실입니다. 사탄은 힘이 있는 적이지만, 구원과 기도와 하나님의 말씀으로 보호받는 사람들은 으르렁거리는 사자 앞에서 무서워 떨 필요가 없습니다.
우리는 “하나님의 능력으로 보호하심을 받은”(벧전 1:5) 사람들입니다. 야고보서 4장 7절 말씀은 “마귀를 대적하라 그리하면 너희를 피하리라”라고 우리에게 확신시켜 줍니다.


주님, 우리의 적이 우리를 삼키려고 찾고 있음을 압니다.
우리를 적으로부터 보호하여 주소서.
우리 안에 거하시는 하나님이 세상에 속한 우리의 적보다
더 크시다고 하는 하나님의 말씀을 믿습니다.

[10] 끝으로 너희가 주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여지고
[11] 마귀의 간계를 능히 대적하기 위하여 하나님의 전신 갑주를 입으라
[12] 우리의 씨름은 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요 통치자들과 권세들과 이 어둠의 세상 주관자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대함이라
[13] 그러므로 하나님의 전신 갑주를 취하라 이는 악한 날에 너희가 능히 대적하고 모든 일을 행한 후에 서기 위함이라
[14] 그런즉 서서 진리로 너희 허리 띠를 띠고 의의 호심경을 붙이고
[15] 평안의 복음이 준비한 것으로 신을 신고
[16] 모든 것 위에 믿음의 방패를 가지고 이로써 능히 악한 자의 모든 불화살을 소멸하고
[17] 구원의 투구와 성령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀을 가지라
[18] 모든 기도와 간구를 하되 항상 성령 안에서 기도하고 이를 위하여 깨어 구하기를 항상 힘쓰며 여러 성도를 위하여 구하라
