" I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant. "
( Genesis 32:10 )

Unlike those who think highly of themselves, Jacob knew that he had been ruined by sin(Gen.32:10).
He thought himself a man unworthy of God’s grace. He had cheated his brother Esau out of his birthright(ch.27), and his brother hated him for it. Now, years later, Jacob was going to face Esau again.

“I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies,” Jacob prayed, using a word for “least” that suggests the tiniest object. “Deliver me, I pray” (32:10-11).

How odd to see those phrases side by side: I am unworthy of Your mercies .... Deliver me! Yet Jacob could pray for mercy because his hope lay not in his own worth, but in God’s promise to look with favor on those who throw themselves at His feet. Humility and contrition are the keys that open the heart of God. Someone has said that the best disposition for praying is being stripped of everything. It is crying out of the depths. It comes from the soul that knows its deep depravity.

Such prayers are offered by those who are thoroughly convicted of their sin and shame, but, at the same time, are convinced of God’s grace that goes out to undeserving sinners. God hears best those who cry out: “God, be merciful to me a sinner!”(Luke 18:13). — David Roper


Lord, I am like Jacob, in need of Your mercy.
I have failed You, and I bow at Your feet today.
Thank You for being a merciful God, ready
and able to forgive and restore me.
It is fitting for a great God to forgive great sinners.

Genesis 32:3-12

[3] Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
[4] And he commanded them, saying, "Speak thus to my lord Esau, 'Thus your servant Jacob says: "I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now.
[5] "I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight."'"
[6] Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."
[7] So Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies.
[8] And he said, "If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape."
[9] Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you':
[10] "I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies.
[11] "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children.
[12] "For You said, 'I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'"

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

스스로를 대단하게 생각하는 사람들과는 달리, 야곱은 죄로 망가진 자신의 모습을 알고 있었습니다(창 32:10).
그는 자신이 하나님의 은혜를 입을 만한 가치가 없는 자라고 생각했습니다. 그는 자신의 형, 에서를 속여 장자권을 얻었고(27장), 그로 인해 형의 미움을 사게 되었습니다. 세월이 많이 흐른 후, 이제 그는 다시 에서를 만나야만 하게 되었습니다.

그 때 야곱은 가장 작은 것을 암시하는 단어(least)를 사용하며 다음과 같이 기도했습니다. “나는…베푸신 모든 은총…을 조금도 감당할 수 없사오나…내가 주께 간구하오니…나를 건져내시옵소서”(32:10-11).

‘주님의 은총을 감당할 수 없습니다’라는 말과 ‘나를 건져내시옵소서’라는 이 두 구절이 나란히 있는 것이 참 희한해보입니다.
하지만 야곱이 하나님께 자비를 구할 수 있었던 것은 그가 자신의 가치에 소망을 두지 않고 하나님의 발아래에 엎드리는 자에게 은혜를 베푸신다는 하나님의 약속에 소망을 둔 까닭이었습니다.
겸손과 통회하는 마음은 하나님의 마음을 여는 열쇠입니다.
누군가 말하기를, 기도의 가장 좋은 자세는 모든 것을 다 내려놓는 것이라고 했습니다. 그것은 마음의 가장 깊은 곳에서 부르짖는 것입니다. 그것은 심하게 부패한 자신의 모습을 잘 알고 있는 영혼으로부터 나옵니다.

그런 기도들은 자신의 죄와 수치에 대해 철저하게 유죄를 선고받았지만, 동시에 도저히 아무 가치도 없는 죄인들을 향한 하나님의 은혜를 확신하는 사람들에게서 나옵니다.
하나님은 “하나님이여 불쌍히 여기소서 나는 죄인이로소이다”(눅 18:13)라고 외치는 자들의 부르짖음을 가장 잘 들으십니다.


주님, 저는 주님의 자비가 필요한 야곱과 같습니다.
제가 주님께 죄를 범하여 오늘 주님 발 앞에 엎드립니다.
저를 용서해 주시고 회복시키시는
하나님의 자비하심에 감사드립니다.

< 위대하신 하나님이기에 엄청난 죄인들을 용서하신다는 것은 타당한 일입니다.>

[3] 야곱이 세일 땅 에돔 들에 있는 형 에서에게로 자기보다 앞서 사자들을 보내며
[4] 그들에게 명령하여 이르되 너희는 내 주 에서에게 이같이 말하라 주의 종 야곱이 이같이 말하기를 내가 라반과 함께 거류하며 지금까지 머물러 있었사오며
[5] 내게 소와 나귀와 양 떼와 노비가 있으므로 사람을 보내어 내 주께 알리고 내 주께 은혜 받기를 원하나이다 하라 하였더니
[6] 사자들이 야곱에게 돌아와 이르되 우리가 주인의 형 에서에게 이른즉 그가 사백 명을 거느리고 주인을 만나려고 오더이다
[7] 야곱이 심히 두렵고 답답하여 자기와 함께 한 동행자와 양과 소와 낙타를 두 떼로 나누고
[8] 이르되 에서가 와서 한 떼를 치면 남은 한 떼는 피하리라 하고
[9] 야곱이 또 이르되 내 조부 아브라함의 하나님, 내 아버지 이삭의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 전에 내게 명하시기를 네 고향, 네 족속에게로 돌아가라 내가 네게 은혜를 베풀리라 하셨나이다
[10] 나는 주께서 주의 종에게 베푸신 모든 은총과 모든 진실하심을 조금도 감당할 수 없사오나 내가 내 지팡이만 가지고 이 요단을 건넜더니 지금은 두 떼나 이루었나이다
[11] 내가 주께 간구하오니 내 형의 손에서, 에서의 손에서 나를 건져내시옵소서 내가 그를 두려워함은 그가 와서 나와 내 처자들을 칠까 겁이 나기 때문이니이다
[12] 주께서 말씀하시기를 내가 반드시 네게 은혜를 베풀어 네 씨로 바다의 셀 수 없는 모래와 같이 많게 하리라 하셨나이다
