 Perception Or Reality?

" Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? "
( Mark 4:38 )

We often hear it said, “Perception is reality.” That idea for Americans may have dawned on September 26, 1960—the date of the first televised debate between two presidential candidates. In front of the cameras, John Kennedy appeared composed; Richard Nixon appeared nervous.
The perception was that Kennedy would be a stronger leader.
The debate not only turned that election, but it also changed the way politics is done in the US. Politics by perception became the rule of the day.

Sometimes perception is reality. But not always—especially our perceptions about God.
When Jesus and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee in a small fishing vessel, a sudden storm threatened to sink the boat. With Jesus asleep and the disciples on the verge of panic, they began to stir Him, asking, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”(Mark 4:38).

Their question sounds similar to questions I’ve asked. At times I perceive God’s apparent inactivity as a lack of care. But His care for me goes well beyond what I can see or measure. Our God is deeply concerned for what concerns us. He urges us to place all our care upon Him, “for He cares for [us]”(1 Peter 5:7). That is true reality.

* Mark 4:35-41

[35] On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."
[36] Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.
[37] And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
[38] But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
[39] Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
[40] But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?"
[41] And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"

 인식인가, 사실인가?

말씀 읽기:
마가복음 4:35 - 4:41

" 선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까 "

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

우리는 “인식되는 것이 바로 사실이다”라는 말을 자주 듣게된다.
미국사람들 사이에 이 생각은 1960년 9월 26일에 대통령 후보 둘이 처음으로 텔레비전에서 토론했던 날부터 비롯된 것 같다. 카메라 앞에서 존 에프 케네디는 침착해보였고, 리처드 닉슨은 긴장되어 보였다. 때문에 사람들은 케네디가 더 강한 지도자일 것이라는 인식을 가졌다. 그 토론은 투표결과를 바꾸었을 뿐 아니라, 미국에서의 정치양상도 바꾸어 놓았다. 인식에 의한 정치가 그 당시의 보편적인 정치풍토가 되었다.

가끔은 인식이 사실일 수 있다. 그러나 항상 그렇지만은 않으며, 특히 하나님에 대한 우리의 인식에 있어서는 더욱 그렇지 않다.
예수님과 제자들이 조그만 어선을 타고 갈릴리 바다를 건널 때, 큰 광풍이 일어나 배가 가라앉을 지경이 되었다.
예수님이 주무시는 가운데 제자들은 공포에 질려 “선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까”(막 4:38)라고 물으며 예수님을 깨우기 시작했다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●

그들의 질문은 내가 했던 질문과 비슷하게 들린다. 가끔 나는 하나님이 일하시지 않는 것처럼 보일 때 관심이 없으셔서 그런 것이라눈 생각이 든다.
그러나 나에 대한 하나님의 관심은 너무 도 커서 내가 볼 수도, 가늠해 볼 수 조차없다.
우리 하나님은 우리에게 관련된 것에 깊은 관심을 가지고 계신다. 하나님은 우리의 모든 염려를 그 분께 내려놓으라고 하신다. 왜냐하면 “그가 [우리를] 돌보시기”(벧전 5:7) 때문입니다.
이것은 진정 사실입니다.


아, 주께서 돌보아 주심을 나는 알고 있네!
주의 마음이 내 슬픔을 어루만져 주시네
낮에는 지치고 긴 밤에 서글퍼도
나의 구주께서 돌보아 주심을 나는 알고 있네
하나님이 함께 계심을 느끼지 못할 때조차도.

< 그분의 인자한 돌보심은 늘 우리 곁을 감싸고 있습니다.>

[35] 그 날 저물 때에 제자들에게 이르시되 우리가 저편으로 건너가자 하시니
[36] 그들이 무리를 떠나 예수를 배에 계신 그대로 모시고 가매 다른 배들도 함께 하더니
[37] 큰 광풍이 일어나며 물결이 배에 부딪쳐 들어와 배에 가득하게 되었더라
[38] 예수께서는 고물에서 베개를 베고 주무시더니 제자들이 깨우며 이르되 선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까 하니
[39] 예수께서 깨어 바람을 꾸짖으시며 바다더러 이르시되 잠잠하라 고요하라 하시니 바람이 그치고 아주 잔잔하여지더라
[40] 이에 제자들에게 이르시되 어찌하여 이렇게 무서워하느냐 너희가 어찌 믿음이 없느냐 하시니
[41] 그들이 심히 두려워하여 서로 말하되 그가 누구이기에 바람과 바다도 순종하는가 하였더라
