 Look Both Ways  

"Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise."
(Joshua 1:2)

During our church's annual New Year's Eve Communion service, we say this prayer together: "Father, we surrender this past year and give it up to You. We give You our failures, our regrets, and our disappointments, for we have no more use for them.
Make us now a new people, forgetting what lies behind and pressing on toward that which lies ahead of us."

"We give You all our hopes and dreams for the future. Purify them by Your Spirit so that our wills shall truly reflect Your will for us."

"As we stand on the threshold of another year, encourage us by our successes of the past, challenge us by the power of Your Word, and guide us by the presence of Your Holy Spirit."

In every transition, it's good to look both ways. When Joshua assumed leadership of Israel,
God told him to consider the past and the future: "Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them" (Joshua 1:2). Then He promised, "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you... Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go"(vv.5,9).

With confidence in God, we can look back and look ahead, then walk boldly into a new year.

 과거와 미래 모두를 보라

"내 종 모세가 죽었으니 이제 일어나라" (여호수아 1:2)

● 말씀을 묵상하며 ●
매년 우리는 교회의 송년 성찬예식 때 다음과 같이 함께 기도합니다.
"하나님 아버지, 지난 해를 모두 돌리어 주께 넘겨 드립니다. 이제 쓸모가 없는 우리의 실패, 후회와 실망스러움을 다 내어드립니다. 이제 우리를 새롭게 하사 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 향하여 나아가게 하옵소서."

"우리 미래의 소망과 꿈도 모두 드립니다. 하나님의 영으로 그것들을 깨끗케 하사 우리의 뜻이 우리를 향한 하나님의 뜻을 진정으로 드러내게 하옵소서."

"새해의 출발점에 서 있사오니 지난 날 이루신것을 통해 우리를 격려해 주시고 하나님 말씀의 능력으로 우리가 도전을 받게 하여주시며 성령으로 임하셔서 인도해 주옵소서."

모든 전환기에는 앞뒤를 다 살펴보는 것이 좋습니다. 여호수아가 이스라엘을 이끌게 되었을 때 하나님께서는 그에게 과거와 미래를 생각하라고 말씀하셨습니다. "내 종 모세가 죽었으니 이제 너는 이 모든 백성으로 더불어 일어나 이 요단을 건너 내가 그들 곧 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 땅으로 가라" (수 1:2).
그리고 약속하시기를 "내가 모세와 함께 있던 것 같이 너와 함께 있을 것임이라...두려워 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 어디를 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라" (5, 9절)고 하셨습니다.

우리는 하나님께 대한 신뢰를 가질 때, 앞과 뒤를 돌아보고 나서 담대히 새해를 향해 나아갈 수 있습니다.

주님, 과거의 실패를 용서해 주시고
주님을 순종하고 가까이 따르는
힘과 용기를 가지고
새롭게 시작하도록 도우소서
