 Open Wide

"I am the Lord your God . . . ; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."
(Psalm 81:10)

As a boy, I was always thrilled to discover a newly constructed robin's nest. It was fascinating to watch for the eggs and then to wait for those featherless little creatures with bulging eyes and gaping mouths to break out of their shells.
Standing at a distance, I could see their heads bobbing unsteadily and their mouths wide open, expecting Mother Robin to give them their dinner.

As I recall those childhood scenes, I think of God's promise: "I am the Lord your God . . . ; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it" (Psalm 81:10).
In spite of this gracious offer to ancient Israel, the people ignored God, and He "gave them over to their own stubborn heart, to walk in their own counsels" (v.12).
If they had accepted God's offer, "He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat; and with honey from the rock" (v.16).

So too God longs to give us spiritual food. And He will satisfy our spiritual hunger as we study His Word, worship with others, listen to faithful Bible teachers, read literature with good biblical content, and daily depend on Him.

If we refuse God's provisions, we will suffer spiritual malnutrition and fail to grow. But if we open our mouth wide, we can be sure that God will fill it.

"나는 여호와 네 하나님이니 네 입을 넓게 열라 내가 채우리라" (시편 81:10)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
어렸을 때 울새의 새로운 둥지를 발견하면 저는 항상 전율을 느꼈습니다. 털도 없이 눈만 툭 튀어나오고 입을 짝짝 벌리는 작은 생명체들이 알에서 껍질을 깨고 나오는 것을 기다리는 것이 흥미로웠습니다. 불안정하게 머리를 흔들며 입을 크게 벌리고 먹이를 갖다줄 어미 새를 기다리는 것을 멀리 서도 볼 수가 있었습니다.

이러한 소년시절의 광경들을 회상할 때 나는 “나는 네 하나님이니…… 네 입을 넓게 열라 내가 채우리라”(시 81:10)는 하나님의 약속을 생각하게 됩니다.
고대 이스라엘 백성들에게 베푸신 이러한 은혜로우신 제의에도 불구하고 그들은 하나님을 무시했으며 하나님은 “그 마음의 강퍅한 대로 버려두어 그 임의대로 행하게”(12) 하셨습니다.
만일 그들이 하나님의 제의를 받아들였으면 그가 “밀의 아름다운 것으로 저희에게 먹이며 반석에서 나오는 꿀로 만족케”(16) 하셨을 것입니다.

하나님은 우리에게 영적 양식을 주시기를 간절히 원하십니다. 그리고 우리가 그의 말씀을 공부하고, 성도들과 함께 예배드리고, 신실한 성경 교사들의 말을 귀담아 듣고, 좋은 성경말씀의 내용이 담긴 서적을 읽으며, 날마다 그를 의지할 때 하나님께서는 우리의 영적인 갈급함을 채워 주실 것입니다.

만일 우리가 하나님께서 주시는 양식을 거절하면 우리는 영적 영양실조에 걸려 성장하지 못할 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 입을 넓게 열면 틀림없이 하나님께서 채워주실 것입니다.

세상이 채울 수 없는 우리의 마음
구주께서 가득히 채우시고
낙심해서 주저앉은 영혼은
그의 임재하심으로 온전히 거룩케 됩니다.
