 Sand In Your Shoes

"Do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on." (Proverbs 4:14-15)

Imagine the obstacles a person would have to overcome to walk from New York City to San Francisco. A man who had accomplished this feat was asked about his biggest hurdle. He said that the toughest part of his trip wasn't walking up the mountains or crossing hot, dry, barren stretches of desert. "The thing that came the closest to defeating me," he admitted, "was the sand in my shoes."

This reminds me of how we can be spiritually defeated by what begins as a little irritant. We let an unkind word, a small setback, or a misunderstanding get us down. Or we allow people around us to influence us in little but wrong ways. Instead of being determined to avoid evil big or small (Proverbs 4:14-27), we compromise.
We neglect to go to the Lord for forgiveness and help.

Sir Francis Drake, the 16th-century English explorer who had sailed around the world, was crossing the Thames River when a violent storm threatened to capsize his boat. He cried, "Shall I who have endured the storms of oceans be drowned in a ditch?"

We would be wise to ask ourselves, "Shall I, who have come so far by faith, be defeated by 'sand in my shoes'?" We must answer with a resolute no!

"악인의 길로 다니지 말지어다 그 길을 피하고 지나가지 말며 돌이켜 떠나갈지어다" (잠언 4:14-15)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
뉴욕에서부터 샌프란시스코까지 걸어가려고 할 때에 극복해야할 장애물들을 한번 상상해 보십시오.
이 큰 일을 해낸 한 사람이 자신이 겪은 일 중 가장 큰 장애물이 무엇이었느냐는 질문을 받았습니다.
그는 자신이 여행하는 동안 가장 힘들었던 부분은 산을 넘거나 뜨겁고 메마른 황량한 사막을 건너는 것이 아니었다고 하였습니다. 그는 이런 말을 했습니다. "나를 거의 실패할 뻔하게 만들었던 것은 신발 속의 모래였다".

이것은 조그만 짜증거리 하나가 어떻게 우리를 영적으로 패배시킬 수 있는지를 생각하게 합니다.
우리의 불친절한 말 한마디나 작은 실패, 오해들이 우리를 무너뜨립니다. 또는 우리 주위의 사람들이 아주 사소하지만 그릇된 방식으로 우리에게 영향을 주는 것을 그대로 내버려 둡니다.
우리는 크건 작든 악한 것들을 단호히 거절해야 함에도 (잠 4:14-27) 불구하고 타협을 합니다. 우리는 주님께 나아가 용서와 도움을 구하지 않습니다.

16세기 영국의 탐험가로서 전 세계를 항해하였던 프란시스 드레이크경은 템즈강을 건너다가 배를 뒤집을 듯 심하게 몰아치는 폭풍우를 만났습니다. 그는 "바다에서 만난 폭풍우도 이겨낸 내가 이까짓 도랑에 빠져 죽을 것인가"? 라고 외쳤습니다.

우리는 스스로에게 "믿음으로 여기까지 온 내가 "신발 속의 모래" 때문에 실패할 것인가"? 하고 물어야 합니다. 우리는 단호히 그럴 수 없다고 답을 해야 합니다!

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
주님, 우리에게 닥칠 수 있는 인생의 크나큰 시련들을
이겨나갈 수 있는 힘을 주소서.
또한 우리로 실패하게 하는 작은 시련들을 만날 때에도
이겨나갈 수 있는 힘을 주소서.
